Custom frame makers

Paul Wyganowski

I’m a sucker for old school detail work like the classic Italian bike frames(it’s one of the lovely traits of the Conundrum, IMHO). Paul Wyganowski does that kind of work and builds unicycle frames. I don’t think any of the fork crowns he works from, though, would allow for frames wide enough to fit the biggest tires out today.

Le Bon Coin is a sort of french craigslist, which is why you don’t see a shopping cart. It’s a private seller, not a company. Maybe Wobbly Bear can bring it to Moab if you’re really interested.

“Today” being a key question; his website is not clear on how current it is. I hope he’s still building stuff, and a phone call would answer that question.

I have one of his Freestyle frames:
"• Freestyle 20” – I have the original built with a two-plate crown and over-sized tandem blades. "
It’s an indestructable fork with long neck; perfect for the professional entertainer (we would rather have something heavy that won’t break). It has served me well since the early 90s.

He also made one of the earliest handlebar setups for the Coker (or 36"). I have one on my old Coker, which I trained on for thousands of miles and rode in Ride The Lobster in 2008.

I have worked with Carbon fiber twice. I’ve made my nearly flat seatbase (I’ve been riding it for almost a year now!) and I’ve started but never finished a bike frame with friends. I want to make a fatty carbon frame, but maybe I’ll make a 650B instead. This is just thinking though. Maybe if I get enough spare time during the summer.

Working CF and being able to make an aluminum or steel frame are 2 totally different skills though. If I make a carbon frame, it wont be for sale, I dont have the proper equipment to make something to sell. I’ve been welding for the past 2 years in school, I know how welding works, youtube showed me how to work carbon fiber.

Jakob, are you going to do frames only or will you do a wheelbuild with a custom frame? I have a couple freewheel projects in mind but probably need to sell some of my fixed wheel unicycles for financing. I’m planning to experiment with disc brake rotor sizes but once I get that settled I’ll be looking for a fat steel frame with a disc tab.

I’d be able to wheel build also, I’ve been building my wheels for 5 years now. I got a little training a few weeks ago from a friend of my boss at the bikeshop, he’s the master of wheel building haha!

This link caused me to do some searching for why we do not use carbon fiber in unicycle frames, which was ultimately (for me) inconclusive.

A carbon fiber frame for road uni’s would be kind of cool.

Search for carbon on Nathan Hoover’s SmugMug page.
