Since the QX-KH doesn’t seem to have any UDC components any more, and most KH models have been out of stock in UDC for quite a while, can we assume UDC is not carrying KH products any more?
I wouldn’t say so, but @rogeratunicycledotcom may have some insights to share ![]()
Good question, especially since qu ax products are not easy to come by in the US.
Hey Everyone,
Trust the forum to find a leaked photo of a project a few years in the making with Covid-related delays. Details will be forthcoming. In brief - you are seeing a redesigned KH crank, which will be called the KH Boundary crank. [Boundary is one of my long-time favorite trails on the Vancouver North Shore]. The Boundary cranks fit the Q-Axle spline and have a lower Q-factor than Spirit Cranks (8 mm instead of 12 mm). Weight is within 10 g of Spirit cranks. I love these cranks - they have tested really well. Beyond a color change to black, the hub spec is similar to Qu-Ax - it tests so well, and it did not make sense to make a competing hub.
The KH unis are distributed across both Qu-Ax and UDC. COVID-related disruptions have been very tough to navigate for the past three years, but are getting better. The Qu-Ax distributed version of the KH36 uses their 36" rim and tire, and the UDC-distributed version uses the Nimbus spec. The other unis have similar spec across both Qu-Ax and UDC (caveat - brake spec may differ). More to come =).
I’m really looking forward to getting a pair of these to put on my Pipifax hub – the Qu-Ax cranks I have are fine, but I think I will need a set of these ;). (plus it seems like a much better interface than ISIS)
Got back in to riding uni early this year and started muni riding. Only knew about cotterless square taper and ISIS interfaces until recently when I read about Qu-Ax. Looking to get me an actual municycle and this really piqued my interest. Any release date for these?
Hi DRD ,
Are you riding freewheel now? I’m interested in hearing how your getting on if so, possibly in the freewheel thread if so.
I just want to know why the old 110mm moment cranks are now non existent…… really miss those.
Moment cranks have been deprecated in favor of Spirit cranks - for external disc brake compatibility. They are also offered in 110 mm if you need them.
I have the 110 spirits and for my style of riding (skatepark/street) the moments just felt/worked better for me.
Well, I’ve got one, or at least a hub and some bits… and a lot of aspiration… which coupled with being a stubborn sort of a chap, will hopefully lead to success eventually.
Many things have conspired against actually getting anything done with it though – mostly pesky stuff like work getting in the way of having any time, haemorrhaging money into other non-optional stuff which has seen fit to consume it… and not being able to get some of the bits I wanted.
I bought the hub as soon as Roger got them in as I couldn’t buy one direct from QU-AX given buying anything from Europe nowadays has become a bit of an issue. It is a thing of beauty and the clutch feels very nice :o). I maybe won’t be thinking that when I land on my back though.
So, I am quite a bit behind you in terms of actual riding it, actually a lot behind you given it hasn’t started yet! Hopefully I’ll get there though. I am going to build it into a 27.5" wheel straight off, that might be ill advised but I don’t want to go swapping the hub between different sized rims and getting different spoke indents in the flange holes.
It was going to go into one of the new KH 27.5" double tab frames, but when I went to buy one a few weeks ago they were out of stock. It was originally going to go into a Mad4One frame but that was put on hold due to supply issues from Mad4One at the beginning of the year. It might end up going into my 29" Oracle frame given the Moment hub on it has a broken flange.
Anyhow, it will be getting a set of these new cranks when they become available – just because…
What do you mean by clutch?
The hub has a sprag clutch to implement the freewheel instead of a ratchet – it is designed to give ‘instant’ engagement rather than relying on pawls engaging in a ratchet at a limited number of places. It is also silent in operation.
In the two-wheeled cycle world, the Onyx Racing hubs are probably the best known:
Thanks DrD. I didn’t read your post well enough to catch that you wrote about the freewheel hub, sorry for that. Most of the thread seems to be about the new KH “Boundary” cranks and how they use the QAxle interface. In that context, I didn’t see how a clutch would be involved. For the freewheel hub it’s clear.
Thanks for keeping a bit of Q in the new design. I know I’m not the only one who doesn’t get on with zero Q cranks.
They look good!
And… Here it lands!
BTW, they are also available for our British friends ![]()
I guess they’ll also be available on UDC US ![]()
@rogeratunicycledotcom small mistake : for internal disc, not external
Thanks for the nudge Didier. I have also done a little blog post as well with everything. We should have got our container today, but it apparently got stuck in some flooding. So will be with us tomorrow.
The KH should be available at all the UDCs and Qu-Ax in the next few days. Everyone’s containers are either just landed or will in the next week or so.

New Kris Holm unicycles for 2023
Does anyone know if the new KH Boundary hubs utilize a solid one-piece design like Spirits or a creak-prone two-piece design?
The “new” boundary hubs are the same as Q-Axle, steel shaft with aluminum hub body.
I’ve never heard of any internal creaking with them, probably because unlike the older 2 piece moment and nimbus hubs with aluminum flanges, it’s a one piece hub shell with a “normal” press fit, while the creak prone ones were short flanges with a spacer pressed onto a spline.
