Alternative brake rotors for Schlumpf gen. 5

Well, I have a bit of a disappointing update. I went for a ride today and while braking I heard a loud snap. I dismounted and looked over my uni but didn’t see anything. Upon returning home I gave it a closer inspection and found my disc rotor has cracked.

Using an adjustable wrench I was able to seat it back together. But seeing as how this was already my second rotor (the first was warped and adding spacers only made it worse).

For reference, I have one set of spacers between the rotor and hub.

Sounds as if an alternative supplier of Schlumpf rotors is desperately needed, since Brakestuff is out of business.

BrakeStuff is in discussion to sell his company

Anyone 'round with enough cash flow and business ambitions?

Florian agreed to send me two warranty-covered disc rotor replacements. I’ll take extra care to install them to spec. This time I’ll use a new brake + fresh pads to see if that makes any difference.

That, however, still doesn’t hinder my appetite for a better solution. Barring my own homemade solution or if BrakeStuff doesn’t sell, I’m interested in the possibility of approaching Hope Tech to manufacture a Schlumpf-compatible rotor.

As I understand it, their MOQ is 50 units. 50 units at ~$100 a piece = $5K. If there are enough interested parties I think it’s a worthy option to pursue. Thoughts?

As I had to ask for dual-hole cranks as well, I have sent them an email yesterday. Here’s their reply:

Hi Maxence,

Thank you for your email and for considering Hope products.

We can possibly manufacture a custom disc. Would you be able to send through a technical drawing we can pass on to see if its possible.

We wont be able to manufacture custom cranks I’m afraid.

Kind Regards,

Sam

So… Does anyone have a technical drawing of the Schlumpf rotor interface?

I’ll DM you about this more…

I did first send a rotor to Torsten but then got interface confirmation info direct from Florian to ensure a good fit.

As for Torsten’s design I did ask if I could get the full design files but as he is selling his business he wanted that to be part of the equity with that. So no joy there in terms of moving production but we can easily get someone else to design the same asymmetrical idea.

It’s just the hub interface that needs to be on point and precise really.

Likely as not Hope can design a nice rotor part themselves :star_struck:

If Hope ever tells us that, based on the drawings, they can manufacture the rotors, do you think you could send them a rotor for them to study it? I believe it would be easier for you as you live in the UK.

Maybe we should move this discussion to another topic as this is no more related to the G29 P-Frame build. We’ll probably also discuss in DM for the next steps to avoid polluting the thread

1000% happy to do that!

I am sure in the past @rogeratunicycledotcom said he was in touch when the folks too so might have some insight into encouraging this to happen. But from your email quote above they sound pretty willing.

I just contacted Galfer and asked, if they are interested. Let’s see.

The only Galfer rotor I have had broke in two pieces when my girlfriend threw her unicycle into it
Let’s hope this was a single non-representative experience, and they are able to manufacture such rotors!

As @finnspin said on the other thread, he did a drawing for a prototype to go with at Shimano IceTech rotor. The pdf he has here might be enough as a first cut drawing for Hope to see if this is something they think is feasible:

I would suggest you ask if they could do a custom aluminium spider based on the inner of Finn’s drawing which would fit one of their floating disks.

Nice one!
@finnspin, do you agree if I send your file to Hope?
