For the first time since I became a parent I’ve seen all the movies nominated for best picture.
I watched the show with my folks every year and continue to do so with my family. The older I get the more of a challenge it is to stay awake and my only prediction for the night is that I will fall asleep before the end.
I think Marion Cotillard was stunning in La Vie En Rose and hope she wins.
Last year I watched every nominated film, this year I saw everything but the Documentary Shorts, and One of the foreign language films because I couldn’t find subtitles for it. When I say all I do mean all, I even watched Norbit.
For Best Picture I’d have voted for Juno, but I’m not a member of the academy yet. My prediction is No Country For Old Men.
Freeheld is a local story for me and I’m glad it won. At some point I’ll have to see it.
Christ on a cracker, that’s devotion. I had to avert my eyes when ads for it were on TV.
I thought Juno was a wonderful film, engaging, thoughtful, and with a twist. But I thought it lacked that je ne sais quoi to be best picture. (I know that sounds pretentious but it actually captures exactly what I mean.) I thought Atonement had that. But I’m also not surprised that No Country For Old Men won.
This year (2009), I hadn’t seen a single of the “Best Picture” movies.
So I thought I’d share with you the only Oscar acceptance speech anybody ever needs to see. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2QUacU0I4yU
Every year I make a point of seeing everything. This year I was able to see all but 2 of the foreign language films. Departures and Baader Meinhof Complex.
For the first time since I’ve been doing this the nominee I was rooting for won Best Picture.
Of course I still lost the Office Pool since seeing the movies makes you think the ones that are actually better films should win, but that’s not how it works.
As for the ceremony Petit sure is an arrogant prick. It’s not his award, he did not direct the film, but he had to use the opportunity to do lame magic tricks that are no longer impressive to anyone over the age of 5. Oh and balancing the Oscar on his chin. But again it’s not his Oscar.
The actual best picture of the year was The Wrestler, but unless it’s about the holocaust depressing films aren’t what the academy goes for so I understand why it wasn’t nominated.
Mickey should have won best actor, but I understand why the commie homo-loving sons of guns would sooner hear Sean Penn supporting gay rights, than Mickey Rourke thanking his dogs who are the only “people” he gives a damn about.
