Mountainuni Disc Brakes Have Arrived!

That’s a good Q actually! Measure the bolts from center to center where the bearing cap bolts to the frame in MM and post it, I can at least answer the question or conform to the spec. We have generated prototypes for testing, but this may be adjusted before production. Our aim is as universal a Uni-Caliper Mount as possible. I don’t know the KH number off the top of my head, but if you know someone with a KH see if the bearing cap is interchangeable, we might get lucky!

The K1 track monster bearing caps are strange, at least to me, and the frame itself doesn’t seem all that durable (I already have several large dents in it from a short time of riding muni)

I doubt there would be much of a demand (if any) for the mounts for track monsters, but if I get the chance I’ll report back to you with info and/or pics.

Let me put it this way, if I end up getting disk brakes, they’ll be on a better frame than my track monster’s haha

So you’re thinking this WILL work with the KH/Schumpf?

I’d love to be a KH/Schlumpf guinea pig, if you don’t have a volunteer yet. I’m an experience gunier with a KH29, currently with a V-brake.

Another thing: I found some Sinz cranks online for $40 - can I get the $159 setup minus the cranks? How much would that be?

Last questions: does the brake itself need to be hydraulic? Are there simpler disc brakes, manual, more like a V-brake?

thin mechanical brakes…

Does anyone have the Quad QMD-6 mechanical disc brakes? it seems to lack the giant plastic knob on the articulating arm that would strum the spokes or strike the crank… just wondering if the thing is narrow enough to use with our system. There are those who use shift levers to drag the brakes and I am hoping that we can offer a mechanical brake. I am also a fan of the Avid Juicy 5 hydraulic brake for its price point, adjustments, and the ability to aim the hose. Are there any other suggestions for brakes? What is the narrowest mechanical brake out there?

The outside rotor to sinz crank arm is 22.7mm, and (on a 29" wheel with Nimbus hub) from inside of rotor to outside of spokes 36.1mm… most hydraulic brakes at their widest seem to be between 36-46mm.

Subtract $70 from the $159 price and snatch up those Sinz… what length? There are Mechanical disc brakes, but they tend to be too wide. I’d love to find some for the drag brake folks. See my earlier post regarding such a brake. That brake has potential, but we can’t guarantee it.

We have given a lot of stuff away and it is costing too much. I don’t know about free trial. Would like to find a Schlumpf wheel in Boston area. Hard to make things with few examples to handle. We may send the first one to Florian, he’s the authority when it comes to compatibility.

Oh, I think the going rate for the Uni-caliper mount will be $65. The initial batch should be completed end of next week.

I would have to measure with callipers but it loos like the Koxx bearing holders have the bolt holes look to be 50mm apart centre to centre. Quite a bit closer than KH or Nimbus.

maybe we’ll get that done on the next batch, I think the narrowist ours will fit at the moment is 52mm. Thanks for doing that dude!

Kris Holm made a good observation…

I used a grinder with a cutoff wheel to shear the “nub” off of a shimano brake lever and when I attached the KH spooner it fit perfectly! (some levers are fat enough to crack the spooner upon installation.)

(I like to check cambriabike.com for short money brakes that were taken off older model bicycles!)

Here’s a thread on custom spooners…

compatability, adapters, and the Uni-Caliper Mount…

The frame tabs that we are making and those that are on frames like Triton, accept only 160mm adapters or “stand-off”, even for our 180mm rotors.

the new Uni-caliper Mount that replaces the bearing cap and facilitates attachment of a caliper to bolt up, will allow the installation of 160-203mm adapters. The difference is, that if you wish to use our 180mm system, you have to get a 180mm adapter for the caliper that you use, or buy a brake that comes with a 180mm rotor.

Eventually, we intend to have a system that will support different sized rotors and you will be able to use 185mm avid system for instance. However, as it stands, any frame mounted tabs on Triton or using our tab mounts will just use the most common 160mm adapters.

I hope this won’t be too confusing.

weld on tab = 160mm iso adapter

bolt-on “Uni-Caliper Mount” = 180mm iso adapter

getting a “post mount” with iso adapter is the most adjustable.

This way, if you wish to use an internal 160-203mm rotor on the left side on a UDC impulse hub (not tested) our Universal caliper mount may also work in that context (theoretically) to retrofit your nimbus uni.

ooooooh…

Sweeeet!

Wow! Unicycle Porn!

I guess the internet really is for porn.

Scott

yeah, I’m a sucker for Uni Porn…

Any word on hoe the Clark’s caliper works on a uni? I may have to get one.

Clark Skeletal for Disc MUni

Nothing Negative to say about any of the brakes we’ve tested. However I will say that the lever position on the Clark Skeletal is ideal. It is very precise, and the small throw screw in front of handle gives between 5-7cm handle-to-spooner variable. Obviously aesthetically appealing brake too.

Close to getting a deal to get calipers and handles added to the Mountainuni packages. It won’t be a required buy, but if customer’s wanted, it can be added to an overall kit purchase. Lots of choices, so I don’t want to make anyone’s decision for them. Especially when colors are involved.

I got my baby back this morning… still it’s waiting for T-bar to attach the lever, so probably first real test in two days (I hope).
The caliper has been filed to make IS mount fit easily with the rotor bolts.

I am loving your pedals
