crotch protection for WOMEN!?

Hey Everyone,
I’ve been reading a great deal on the topic of protecting “the crown jewels” “the Twins” “Little Buddy” and all, but what about girls? It’s not exactly comfy for my genitalia either, and I wonder if all of these things (cornstarch, cycling shorts, angle of the seat, etc…) do they apply to me? what about the chamois, and am I looking for free-ride shorts or DH? are there any other women out there???

Well luckily the ‘girls’ are not quite as exposed as the ‘boys’ but, yes, I would say that being comfortable in the saddle is as important for female riders as it is for males.

I have tried out various seats and seat angles and found what works best for my shape. It is definitely a trial and error process as each body is different. In terms of cycling shorts, my latest and greatest discovery is that it is in fact true that riding, without underwear, in a good pair of chamous lined cycle shorts is the most comfortable option out there, IMHO. The other wonderful discovery that has allowed me to at least double my mileage has been the addition of the T 7 touring handle to my 29’er. What a wonderful way to not only stay comfortable for much longer while riding but, as an added bonus, hill riding and average speed really seems to be enhanced with the addition of the handle.

As a guy

I must say that I like the chamios lined bike shorts idea, yet I cannot comment on the non front bone comfort issue.
I am quite sure that we all have 2 sore tail bones after a while. I wrote a thread about how I modded a KH air seat. Simple enough, and it is the most comfortable seat I have tried yet.

As I try to do a lot of distance riding (and I’m not the lightest woman in the world) this has been an important issue for me. I have found that cycle shorts are a must - but you have to be sure that the padding/chamois comes up far enough in the front otherwise there could be a seam in just the wrong place. So far I have found the new KH freeride seat to be the most comfortable but I still can’t ride for longer than 5 miles without having to walk for a few steps to get the blood circulating again.

I have also been experimenting with the angle of the seat and so far it suits me to have it as far forward as possible. But still by 5 miles in the saddle I am numb and uncomfortable and my feet get a bit numb.

I am sure that, because girls are in a minority in unicycling, there will never be a unicycle seat made especially for us.:frowning:

I asked about seats designed for women at BUC on the udc stand, the answer i got was that we’re less difficult to please and we can manage perfectly fine on the mens ones, basically. I dont wear cycle shorts, have thought about it, but i seem to manage in jeans or lightweight trousers. but then again, i havent ridden very far yet, the furthest ive been was 6 miles cross country on a 20inch with a numbus gel saddle, which i find comfortable enough.
Cathy, when you say you ride with the seat as far forward as possible, do you mean the front tilted up? i havent adjusted my saddle at all really, but now that i have a coker and the chance to go further im going to have to think about making things more comfortable.
Maybe we should design our own saddle? im up for trying it out if the men dont want to help us!

This Unicon was the first with more girls I think. in Germany over 80% of the unicyclists are female. I think the reason why there are no Girls Unicycle Seats is because no Girl has a unicycling brand.

i have been riding a KH freeride saddle, and it’s groove down the middle offers great comfort on the ol’ sit bones, have you tried this?

i think the ladies would also appreciate this feature

edit: it was me who was talking about the cornstarch (cheap alternative to baby powder) as a relief…this helped in the friction in the crease of where the legs attach to the torso, that wet skin rubbing against each other with every leg movement, so if you chaffing/discomfort is there, i think it would offer you some relief.

I have the same problem Cath mentioned. I have a great pair of baggy cycling shorts with a liner and padded seat but the padded bit is too much at the back and doesn’t cover the very front meaning that after riding for more than 20 mins the pressure on the pelvic bone gets quite uncomfortable. I have been really surprised by pics and videos of others riding in jeans or ordinary casual wear which I think would crucify me.

Just got a Nimbus gel saddle though and that has made quite a difference. A saddle designed for girls would be great although I guess as we are all different it might not do the trick for everyone!

Tet

Maybe if someone made a good prototype, one of the existing brands would produce it. It looks like there’s a market for them.

the girls have family jelews, just in other places.
they are just less likly to fall on em.

I’ve occasionally thought that there really ought to be a women’s seat available. Even with the existing saddles I sometimes wish that the rear section was a bit wider under my sit bones - I imagine that must be much worse for a woman’s pelvis.

Although women have the advantage of not sitting on the “jewels”, I imagine it’s probably not much more comfy having the saddle go up your bum because it’s not wide enough for your sit bones!

More variation in saddles would be great, but as I understand it the most expensive part of the manufacturing process is in getting the mould made for the base. Changing the foam is easy, which is why we now have (Velo saddle / Nimbus Gel / all the KH saddles / Koxx saddle / etc) built around one base by velo. The width of the base is limited, and restricts how wide the padded area at the rear can be. I’d like to see saddles with a wider rear in the interests of long distance comfort (n.b. obviously not good for SIF, but then you don’t care about saddle comfort anyhow  )

Just to point something out. Girls complaining about their nether regions whilst unicycling, is like guys complaining about their pecs getting sore from bouncing while running…There may be SOME miniscule comparison, but BY FAR we are each in a field of our own.

That aside  my .02 is that I have recently discovered that riding in a surfer style bathing suit with thick fabric is by far the most comfortable article of clothing I have tried out thus far. I’ve never tried bike shorts, but I have tried bike underwear. I’m sure bike shorts would be slightly better than the underwear. But by far, the best is Rambo style with the bathing suit.

It’s thick fabric stops any sort of bunching problems that occur with EVERY other type of clothing I’ve tried. Plus, since it’s a bathing suit, it doesn’t get or stay wet and clingy. It’s been a savior for my long(er) distance uniing.

I have the T7 handle with rail adapter and I have the front tilted down at the moment. Well, I don’t think it’s actually down, just as flat as possible.

Brian, I also think the freeride is great, but as mark said, just not wide enough. The dip in the middle is great but I would like it to be wider at the back.

Perhaps we should submit udc to a harrassment campagn to show that we’re not really easy to please.

I wear cycling shorts under loose nylon shorts.

Carrying extra weight makes a big difference.

For the guy who says that girls complaining about sitting is like guys complaining about their pecs bouncing: I wonder how much about the female anatomy you know… There are some tender tissues down there on women and lots of them.

I have found the best practice is practice, get out there. Build up the musculature down there (there are muscles down there), and don’t feel whimpy for taking a break for circulation. It’s not cheating.

Good luck!

The first split bike saddles were made for women, not men. Maybe someday you’ll be lucky enough to have the opportunity to see female genitals.

with the exception of the ‘new bedfrod girl’?

Have any of you women tried a more conventional seat like this one?

The front appears to be tipped up more than other conventional saddles.

Crotch Comfort for Distance Riding.

Hi All,

This is an interesting thread and I have a lot of experience and input to give here.

The most important peice of advise is to wear underwear without thickened edges. I am talking about where there is an extra peice of material folded over the edge to make a nicely tailored and thick edge. This thick edge rubs the crease of your leg/crotch raw when it gets wet from sweat. I myself have even found that Thong or G-String underwear is great. It only has a thin strip that is kept in the center and far away from the creases of your leg/crotch.

I have never liked the bicycle shorts. I have found that just plain old Levi jeans are the most comfortable for riding. Don’t wear baggy ones. Wear jeans that are snugg but not tight. Baggy jeans bunch up under you and create ridges that can rub you raw or pinch your skin. Denim is a thick material that has a lot of absorbancy and is made from cotton that is pretty soft. It is also a great protector from thorns and grass cuts.

With Muni there is a lot of standing while riding. When jumping over and off obsacles the weight is removed from the seat alowing dammed up blood to rush though again. I can ride Muni comfortably for much longer than Cross Country. This leads to the suggestion of just riding while standing for a few seconds every few minutes.

The vast majority of your wieght should be on your ASS! I have never had a problem crushing my Weavos. Now the male Weavos and the female Wunder down under are located in the same place anatomically, so if men can adjust thier saddles to avoid puting presure on thier delicate parts women should also be able to do the same. If not play around with your saddle angle. I agree that maybe the rear part of the seat needs to be wider for women though.

As you ride more you will become more mucled and build up callouses in the delicate areas. Also you will become more nimble thus avoiding the jerky flappy moves of novices that create the most friction on your crotch.

Unicorn

Funny you say that. My girlfriend when learning would have a Thong/G-string on, and found it to be most uncomfortable.

She ended up buying pack of boxers that she would wear when she was riding and that helped her tons.

Different things for different people.
