Me and my friend were talking about this, and while we were, I really listened to Led Zeppelin’s Heartbreaker closely, and discovered one of my new all-time favorite solos, unaccompanied and apparently improvised. Pure genius, that one. Not nearly long enough, though…I would’ve loved to hear Page carry on for another few minutes.
My other favorite, possibly my number 1 favorite solo, is Skynyrd’s Freebird…unoriginal, I know, but damn is it awesome.
I was gonna say Freebird…I don’t like Skynyrd much but it is a very good one.
Does the entire Star Spangled Banner by Jimi Hendrix count? I mean, it’s not exactly a solo, it’s just an instrumental song…but it’s the best I’ve heard ever ever EVER!!
The guitar solo in Thin Lizzy’s “Whiskey in the Jar” - it’s completely out of keeping with the song, but good for all that. And the last little burst in China Town that stops dead at the end always makes me laugh.
I just found this new producer who does a hiphop techno jammy kinda style www.ronaljenkees.com alot fo good solos. …aslo www.youtube.com/ronaldjenkees I know he plays the keys not the “geetar” I think texans like that too right;) . He actually has some songs with a guitar synth, among many other sounds.
I agree with Matt…Heartbreaker is freakin’ awesome. I think it’s far better than Stairway to Heaven. Other should-be-mentioneds are Smoke on the Water (the live version, with the guitar vs. organ ending), and Yellow Ledbetter by Pearl Jam.
I wish you would have simply asked about songs with kickass guitar parts. Rock You Like a Hurricane (Scoripions) and Out Ta Get Me (Guns N’ Roses) would definitely be on that list.
It’s not all that recent, but it still surprised me…Comfortably Numb voted the best guitar solo? With songs such as Eruption, STH, Freebird, etc.? I love comfortably numb, it’s my favorite Floyd song, but I wouldn’t put it as number 1 solo.
