📜 [Wiki] Unicycle vocabulary in every language

isn’t the one with ett- more unerlining the fact that it hat only one (read exact one!) wheel?

Yes, “ett hjul” means “one wheel”, while “et hjul” means “a wheel”. The former is clearly correct in this context.

Hjul is a neutral noun, not a masculine, so “en hjul” is syntactically incorrect.

Languages are often not solely used in one country. I think we have two choices, either drop the flags all together, or use only one flag per language.

The latter will leave people out, but I think most will understand and be okay with it. If we want to make sure to include everyone, then no flags should be used.

I think there are bigger worries than what flags to use!!!

Ps. Would be nice to see some non European contributions (I am monolingual unfortunately)

Right, I think flags are only for visional explanation, but not for national sentiments.

What even is a bumper in unicycling terms? A bumper on a car would be ‘Stoßstange’. A bumper on a bicycle might be ‘Schutzblech’? Where would I install a bumper on a unicycle though?

In german I would call it StoßfĂ€nger, its the back plastic part of a unicycle saddle.

It’s the replaceable plastic part on the front and rear of your saddle.

Oh, I was a bit slower

The front part, I would call grip or handle, although it works as a bumper.

I’m not a real French speaker, but shouldn’t the French for disk brake be “frein à disque” and not “disque de frein”?

I’m not thinking that I speak better French than the native speakers  but that they got confused by the title - “disque de frein” would be the “brake disk” (the rotor), not the “disk brake” (the whole system).

You’re right! I have misread the English label. That’s fixed

Nice project!

Terms to consider adding:
seat tube }
seat pin } (those two confuse many people)
seat cover
tube (the one inside the tyre)
crown
bolt
nut
axle
rotor (of disc brake)
brake cable
(Dutch: zadelbuis, zadelpen, zadeldek, binnenband, kroon, bout/schroef, moer, as, remschijf, remkabel.)

I think that a category of common tools should be added. Think of pedal wrench, spoke wrench, allen key, crack extractor. (Dutch: pedaalsleutel, spaaksleutel, inbussleutel, cranktrekker)

Flags should indicate languages, not countries. For instance, the language French is spoken in France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Switzerland and some more - even outside Europe. The name of the language is derived from the country France, and therefore the French flag is appropriate, and no others. The ‘name’ of the flag is equal to the ‘name’ of the language. Same for German, English etc.

Is that also a type of beer in dutch?

Wikipedia says: „ Lager beer uses a process of cool fermentation, followed by maturation in cold storage. The German word “Lager” means storeroom or warehouse.
My explanation for the english word bearing is that the wheel is held or stored (German: gelagert) in the axle.

I missed this message, that’s awesome!

I’ll try to update the wiki if I can find some time, or I’ll let someone else motivated enough to do it!

Super useful. :+1:
