Matthew Morris,

89 mm cranks are very short for a 36. How well does it ride with such short cranks? Apparently 100 miles is doable. Wow!

Finally did a century! This was the Mid Atlantic Century near the Outer Banks of NC. The course was very flat but had 10-20 mph crosswinds for 90% of the course. No real saddle pain or chaffing and I accredit that to having a Nurse Ben ghetto flattened KH Freeride, plenty of Chamois Butter, Gold Bond and double cycling shorts. I did have plenty of numbness that was relieved by a few quick seconds off the saddle every 5-10 miles. It was 4 laps so I was able to pitstop at my truck. During race I ate 4 PB sandwiches, 2 liters of coconut water (no cramping!), 4 power gels, 1 Cliffbar and 4 bananas. Carried a small Camelbak but only needed to keep it 1/4 full to keep weight down. Wore ultra light running shoes that helped me from getting too fatigued. Riding alone and boredom were the biggest struggles. I canā€™t wait to do another one next year on a geared 36er so I can keep up with my woman who finished on her road bike about 1h30m ahead of me. 80ish riders but I didnā€™t finish last, passed a few old ladies in the 70+ age group :stuck_out_tongue: Hope yā€™all can use some of these tips or techniques for your next big ride!

David Stone, 2013-9-8. g36, 125/150mm cranks (both used). 106mi. 10h10m (12h45m elapsedā€¦ Lots of knee pain that eventually went away.)

I forgot to add some notes about todayā€™s Century (106mi, g36, 125/150mm).

I started out just after 5:30am and skipped the official Manhattan start because in recent years itā€™s been insanely crowded. I managed to ride the first 52 miles in just over 4 hours of riding, averaging 11.4 mph, with only a few minutes of non-riding time. Much of that was in high gear and with the 125mm holes. At the halfway point, the outer area of my left knee started killing me; I knew this pain from not too long ago, but I hadnā€™t felt it in months of training, even on days when Iā€™d ridden 60+ miles. I decided to chug on, tho, buoyed by the excellent encouragement from my fellow riders (all on two wheels). The pain eventually subsided ā€“ maybe after 30 more miles.

Because of the knee pain as well as the hilly conditions ahead, I decided to finish up in low gear (almost the whole last 54 miles). So the first 52 miles took about 4.5 hrs, and the last 54 took over 6 hrs.

Itā€™s worth noting that, as far as I know, only three unicyclists have completed the 100 miles in NYC; the other two are my brother (John) and Roland Kays. This particular route is not only quite hilly but is also broken up frequently by red lights, stop signs, and tricky parts over a few bridges. So Iā€™m pretty psyched that I kept my average riding speed over 10mph.

My secant century a year later from the first. Knew what was coming! This year though there was 20mph side winds from mile 60-100 and headwinds from mile 45-60.

Iā€™ve done multiple centuries now

But I think this weekends one deserves a mention, simply because there arenā€™t many done on a standard 24"/125mm unicycle. Iā€™ll post a writeup in a separate thread

about the rides

I just heard about this thread a few weeks ago from Scott Wilton, so I decided to put my name on the list.

century no 1:
The first century I did was in September 2011. Since I had moved to Vienna in 2010 I wanted to ride to my parents hometown Gleisdorf which happens to be ~163 km. I first thought about doing it by bike, a plan which was soon abandoned. Then I thought about doing it in two days but after some time/speed calculations I decided I go for it and try it in one day.

That first time I was neither experienced nor prepared and made a few mistakes.
1: I Invited a guest for dinner the day before- no drinking involved but staying up until 3 am
2: I overslept- wanted to start at 6:30, didnā€™t hear the alarm going off and woke up at 6:25. Which led to mistake number
3: I didnā€™t take the time for breakfast- jumped out of bed in my clothes and on the uni
4: I had enough to drink but nothing to eat- thought about that at km 50, so I stopped at a supermarket and bought: chocolate chip cookies of which I ate 6 during the rest of my ride
5 I underestimated the Styrian hills- I didnā€™t believe the cycle route planer when it told me there will be over 2500m of climbing. The total elevation gain is only ~150m but it was quite a challenge for me.
All in all it took me about 11 hours 30 minutes (riding time about 10 hours).

no 2:
After the 100k race at UNICON 16 I knew I could do it faster if I took a reasonable supply of food with me. So I did it again last summer (July 2013) in just over 9 hours (9:05 or so). Unfortunately I canā€™t tell you about riding time but it was probably about 8 to 8:15 hours. So I am proud to have qualified for the 100:10:1 challenge (not quite for the 10.000 though - maybe next time a 10.000:100:10:1?).
All the best and I hope to see most of you in MontrƩal,
Felix

Felix, you are so amazing. That is a great story. You left home (late) on a 100 mile ride and forgot to eat breakfast?!!! Who does that?!!! Who could survive that?!!! Felix.

It was great to see you in Dusseldorf - and it will be great in Montreal. Beau will be there too. I need a jet pack or something so I can actually ride WITH you. 9:05 for 100 miles unsupported! Great!

ā€”Nathan

thanks Nathan

Thanks Nathan!
That is one way to put it. I would rather say stupid than amazing but it was a good learning experience. Although at first I thought it were the climbs that killed me. Only after the 100k race in Brixen i came to the conclusion that it was probably the lack of food. Thatā€™s why I was quite confident the second time.

Yes I loved seeing you in DĆ¼sseldorf! Too bad we had so little time - somehow I missed the award ceremony by being invited for lunch after the race (again a perfect example for my organizational talent). All the more I am looking forward to Unicon in Montreal, seeing all of you again.

It would be great riding with you. I donā€™t have an exact plan yet, but it could be that I will be around your place in November or so.
Say hello to Grace and Beau from me,
Felix

Hey MUniEd
Well Done! and welcome to the forum
100 miles on a November dayā€¦ thatā€™s well impressive.

Anybody know who is the youngest unicyclist known to have completed a 100 mile-in-a-day ride? In prep for my upcoming 24hr/200 mile ride, I will be doing a century sometime next week, and if all goes as planned, 14 year old Augie Tourdot will be joining me. So Iā€™m wondering, if he he completes the century - which I have no doubt he will - would he become the youngest unicyclist to do so? Iā€™m guessing John Foss may know the answer.

Beau was 15 in 2007 when he did his. I think Jack Hughes was already older as well when he did his. Rob Muellerleile is about the same age as Beau so also was older than 14. I donā€™t know of anyone else on this list thatā€™s younger - maybe someone else does?
