Which unicycle to purchase?

I am in turmoil over which unicycle to purchase, (my learner busted for good.) I
live in the U.K and am looking at either a Pashley 20’ MUni or form s British
shop Butterfingers, a Dave Mariner, D.M Ringmaster 20’ or 24’. I am unsure which
is best, the D.M is hand-built and the shop has nothing but praise for it, (of
course.) I am unsure of the quality and durability of either, (I broke my last
one by bending the axle by hopping with MTB cranks attatched).

If anyone has any advice on which is best and what size to use, (I use it
for tricks and short travelling.) then it would be greatly appreciated. Also
if anyone knows of another way of getting a good unicycle in Britain for
around £150.

DM’s use the same hub as the Pashley unless you get a “Uni-hock” at £129.00, a
Ring master advanced at £195.00 or for the ultimate the DMATU at £395.00 It
really depends what you are wanting them for. The uni-hock was developed for
hockey and uses DM’s own hardened hub and a 48 spoke wheel. It has a rounded
frame so it is not as good for standing on the frame (pritty advanced tricks).
The Ringmaster Advanced, is superb. It is bomb proof, with DM’s own hub again
and has a tougher frame and level grippy top for foot control. If it is good
enough for Julian then it is really GOOD. The DMATU is the ultimate off road
machine. It has a splined 3/4" shaft and could out-tigger Tigger. If you want
something for under 150 pounds and quality, then you only have 3 choices. DM
Ringmaster, DM “Uni-hock” (there will be a delivery time on this) and a Pashley
Muni at £115.00, which now comes with a Viscount saddle!

Give me a call if you would like, I sell all of these.

Have fun

My DM Ringmaster is now approaching its tenth birthday - I thoroughly recommend
it. The pedals are welded on, but that’s another story. It’s a very sturdy
machine and takes a lot of punishment with a wide grin. The only time I tried a
Pashley was when I was learning, so can’t really comment. That wasn’t a MUni.

If you can trace the swine who stole some Cokers up in the North East recently
they might cut you an interesting deal. Be sure to mail us all in if this
happens…

Re: Which unicycle to purchase?

I am a relative beginner. I bought DM Ringmaster Advanced 24" at £199. After
several weeks of throwing it all over car parks I’m now totally confident that
nothing short of being driven over by a tank would do more than superficial
damage. It didn’t complain at being dropped in a lake either. And it’s
comfortable to ride and has a lovely chrome finish.

The other unis I’ve seen all appear (in my ill-informed and partisan view),
somewhat inferior in build quality and durability.

My only minor quibble is that the rubber covering on the bumper bars (front and
rear of the saddle) has worn very quickly, though I stand DM can supply
replacement parts. But the saddle has been perfectly protected.

Though the price is more than you specified, you should look really hard at
this unicycle.

I’ve got both a Pashley (26" tho) and a very ancient DM (so old it has
cottered cranks!). They are both good machines, but for sheer bomb-proof
solidity I’d go for the DM every time. I’ve given my DM hell for the last 8
years (and it was well used when I bought it second-hand) and it is only just
showing its age and wear.

DMs are Very robust. His new DMATU has the best hub I’ve ever seen on a uni,
even his standard hubs are bloody tough. I’d say for a 20inch a DM will be
better value than a Pashley, and way better than a no-brand.

Ringmasters have been abused for years and still go on strong.
