I thought it would be fun to have a thread where everyone shared what their username means. Apparently, There have been threads like this before, but I’m just starting a new one.
I just recently got back into unicycling. In that 10+ year hiatus another huge passion/hobby of mine took precedence. I’m an avid solver and collector of twisty puzzles, Rubik’s Cube being the most well known twisty puzzle. In fact there are thousands of different types of puzzles that use Erno Rubik’s original concept to create some elaborate and difficult puzzle challenges. I have a collection of nearly 300 different twisty puzzles, henceforth “Puzzle”. Oh, and my name is Max, but the term also implies that something is being done to the maximum, so it just fit well.
Yeah twisty puzzles are indeed fun. I unfortunately had to completely stop due to injury. Though i was never particularly good/fast so the world of speedcubing etc did not suffer a great loss.
I was knighted by ruarí due to my exceptionally cranky attitude or something…
I would be cranky too, if Im never the last one to post…
Anyways Setonix brachyurus is a type of small kangaroo with the English name Quokka. I used to collect scientific names of animals. I saved those on thecomputer and I had the 9000 bird species and 4000 mammals ‘complete’ for that time, as people like to reclassify species. The quokka was one of 5 animals starting with the letter Q in Dutch. Setonix has thus been my internet name for 23 years now
My father, mother, both brothers, my wife, both sisters-in-law, both children, a grandson, and a smattering of nieces and nephews all have the last name Harper. I liked it so I decided to use it.
One day in 2018, when I was learning to ride a unicycle, my son got frustrated with me and said, “You can do it! You are just scared!” (I was, due to two spine surgeries in 2017).
Then he said, “I’ve seen you ride enough now. You can do this! You just need to WANT to!”
Then, he turned around and walked back to his unicycle and rode away. He made me a little mad, in a good way. But he was 100% correct.
The next day I rode 50 yards (~meters), and then immediately after that, I rode a full 100 yards. That 100-yard ride was when “it clicked”.
So, Uni2ONE2 stands for:
“You need to WANT to”
in honor of my son and his “pep talk”.
Here’s a screenshot from the video of that first 100-yard ride. Notice the too-short seat post? It made an incredible difference once I ordered a new seat post that was long enough.
Excellent story. ^^^^
Mine is a nod to one of my other hobbies: European style strategy board games (Euro games). It was the first hobby I went online to find a community for, and have been using the name as my online moniker ever since. It is a play on people person, with Meeple referring to the humanoid tokens that are frequently used in Euro games.
Mine is my first name.
…
Wait, are we supposed to all get a nickname with a special meaning?
Anyway, my usual nickname in online games and other forums is “Abrikot”. This is derived from “Abricot”, the french word for “Apricot”. I have chosen this nickname at a time when I have been creating an orange-colored character in a MMORPG. A friend of mine suggested I call them “Abricot”. Unfortunately, this was already used by another player. So, I changed the “c” into a “k” and voilà! Plus, I really like apricots
That is why you have this Regular label, which means you use your own first name.
The only reason I found a nick name online, was because I like to stay anonymous. That way I won’t get any spam which uses my real name it is easier to distinguish if I do get emails with my real name in it.
Besides a kangaroo on a unicycle is a nicer sight than a human on a uni
Now you can change your name on here to Abrikot. Those are also a nice sight on unicycles.
Ahah, no way. I consider the unicycle community to be my real life, so I user my real name. As I am the President of the French Unicycling Society, it makes it easier for people to distinguish whether it’s an official communication. I may change back to Abrikot once my mandate is over… But that is not for today
Self explanatory! We all hear it at least 20 times per ride
I don’t. I mean, a good apricot is good, right… But most of the time, it’s either floury, or sour. Or half of the apricot is tasty and juicy (the “front” side) and the other half (the “ass” side) hard and sour.
I wanted to add an apricot emoji in your honor, but that apparently doesn’t exist on the Internet. Peach emoji is used instead.
This one would have been nice if there wasn’t the sliced part.
Oh wait, I’ve found this “mango” emoji, that will do…
Noice!
Do you have a picture of your collection, or your favourite ones?
When a female quokka with a joey in her pouch is pursued by a predator, she may drop her baby onto the ground; the joey produces noises which may serve to attract the predator’s attention, while the mother escapes.
Although quokkas are approachable, there are a few dozen cases annually of quokkas biting people, especially children.
Any favourites?
Yours is my middle name.
There’s a setting to show the full name next to the username (and even put the full name first), but I didn’t enable it (it’s site wide, not per user).
Now you know what I think of my kids. You can just make new ones right.
As for biting, my 4-yr-old bit me the other day. I still have his bitemarks in my arm.
What about this beautiful lil’ abricot?
No it is because he is really good with short cranks. I actually knighted him following his achievements with 45mm cranks on a 36er.
As for my own, while my name is Ruarí here, which is just you know my name, on social media (including Strava) I tend to use “velocipederider” as a handle. From Wikipedia:
A velocipede (/vəˈlɒsəpiːd/) is a human-powered land vehicle with one or more wheels. The most common type of velocipede today is the bicycle.
This works as I do not only ride unicycles but also a penny farthing, halfbike (which is not a unicycle) and a non electric kick scooter (footbike).
the other day on Ridiculousness they had an item about people crashing with penny farthings. It seemed that the slightest brake of the front wheel sends you flying. I reckon because the steer hangs over your legs, you cannot just hop off like with a unicycle?
Funny you write about the non-electric kick scooter. My boy is only 4 years old and likes to ride on his bike through the park or town. My daughter and I always had to run after him, so I bought 2 kick scooters for us. Now every Saturday when my wife works all day, I take the kids for a ride and I take the kick scooter. However many people look at me, like I am too old to ride one. So basically I am not allowed to ride unicycle or kick scooter, otherwise Im “different”. Pity for them, I don’t care and do what I want.
