Something similar happened to me on the 29er, only was I counting pedal revolutions to calculate my cadence (and from there the speed) when it happened. And given my long cranks I was riding way slower than you, below 20km/h. Since the chase for records wasn’t planned I wore zero protection. Sandals aren’t very helpful when you try to outrun a UPD ![]()
I have a pro-tip for you as someone whomst’ve ridden a few miles with flip-flops - do NOT fall

Thanks, will try to remember from now on ![]()
Problem is, I’m very forgetful ![]()
Yes, both of us broke our backs on the same trail system within a month of each other. Cray cray.
Yeouch! This is definitely a thread nobody wants to add to. Sending you good wishes to heal up soon!
I was speeding along, barely in front of John Childs on my Coker. I was looking behind me as he was gaining so I failed to notice the damaged, bent-over yield sign coming up on me like a Guillotine blade. I was decapitated instantly. I pursed the lips on my bodiless head to provide as much impact protection as possible. Fortunately two things happened. Firstly, my head did NOT bounce or roll into traffic and was therefore NOT crushed like a cantaloupe. Secondly, John Childs had his full toolkit with him that day (including espresso machine and duct tape) so he was able to rapidly and expertly reattach it. I owe him big time.
It’s good that you get a plate in then it will hurt less in the long run if it heals well. Well, I once had a titanium plate in it because of a Sturtz unicycle. Unfortunately this came out again. Afterwards I only had problems with my collarbone. 1.5 years ago I had the same problem on the same side and the same spot again. The doctor let it heal like that. Since then I’ve only had more problems with it. I can no longer sleep on my side at night, I have pain when I make the wrong or too fast movement and my collarbone has become very unstable. I should avoid any further falls. In 6 months my bones should be completely reconstructed after 2 years after the fall. I’m curious, I’m starting to have little hope anymore because I can’t do trials anymore, it hurts too much.
Give the body time and I wish you only the best for recovery.
This morning I had an interesting fall. It’s icy here but you can’t see it. I went around a curve with the 24" and bang… I slipped completely because there was lightning ice where we were, but I didn’t know that. When I was walking today I also had problems not falling over. But I did got everything going well, until my right knee hit the asphalt. There will be a big bruise. This is the first time something like this has happened to me
Reading this thread really makes me want to go out and buy some protective gear. Do you guys have any recommendations for knee and elbow pads?
Nomen est omen…
@Maximus , whatever fits and is comfortable to wear. I have Kris Holm knee/shin guards. I use them primarily for muni. They protect the calves too, should the pedal hit from behind. When I‘m riding on streets I usually wear a cheap set of knee protectors. Was recently trying on some expensive ones that are flexible to wear but harden on impact. That sounds good to my ears, but that particular model seemed less comfortable than my cheap one, so I didn‘t buy it.
Also, some people prefer protectors with a hard shell, since they tend to slide when you fall, whereas soft ones could kinda stick to the ground and subsequently move on your body, thereby exposing the areas they are supposed to protect.
I’m using IXS cleaver knee pads for Muni and freewheel riding and there amazing , they have a silicone donut around the knee cap and inside the pads which stops them slipping down, they are so comfortable and easily forgotten about while wearing them.I wore 661s years ago for downhill mtb and they were awful in so many ways.
I went and bought myself some protective gear after I had a bit of a crash of my own (detailed here, thankfully wasn’t hurt too bad). Got a good helmet with Mips, some Fox Dirtpaw gloves, Kris Holm knee/shin pads, and some elbow pads. I rode with the whole set until I regained some of my confidence in riding. Now I mostly ride with just a helmet and gloves, though the rest of the kit comes in handy when the occasion calls for it.
I also use this Knee pads but mine are slipping down when I crashed at the forest way with 18 km/h on the 29" Muni. I also wear safty boots from the work, this shoes are a high top shoe and this pads are slipping down. This Pads are good but not better than the old POC VPD Bone pad. For years is not build anymore. There was the best pad what I have ridden since 2015.
I didn’t have serious crashes when wearing the KHs, but I’m pretty confident that they won’t slip down because they will eventually push against the shoe - that hopefully stops them from moving.
I once bruised my left knee with the KH pads. Since then I haven’t used them for riding Muni anymore and I’ve had a different tire on my Muni since then.
Hm, there seems to be no perfect solution, except not falling… ![]()
Hi Felgenbremse
Sorry to hear that you found the IXS slip for you, did you get size right and I assume your wearing them directly onto skin and not on top of clothing?
I have what I would class as skinny lower legs and they don’t more even the slightest.
It is the right size. I’ve had the IXS for 2 years and they slip. I usually wear the protectors directly on the skin. These also go over long trousers. For years I have had the problem of falling a lot when riding a unicycle for health reasons and that’s why I value good protection. 3 broken bones from unicycling are enough for me in the last 6 years. I have found that every schooner slips when it is old and worn out. But after 2 years and then paying 100 euros for it, it’s not good. I’ve already tried the ION K-Pact but it offers no protection at all if you really fall. It’s more of a protector for people who don’t fall and where their head gets out from somewhere. For me it’s always the case that I always give 100 percent and that I keep my brain at home when I go unicycling. All the protectors are slipping and I haven’t found a solution yet as to what I can do to prevent the slipping.
I have found that this particular pair/design doesn’t not slip, at all, when I fall. Triple 8 makes other pads that fit a little more “sloppy” on me, but this particular knee pad is rock solid and doesn’t move during UPDs.
It’s strange how for you they slip down , I was out today wearing mine for freewheel riding and they didn’t move at all.
I was trying to learn to cycle backwards when I panicked and took both feet off the pedals expecting the uni to immediately squirt out from under me. Instead, my body rotated forward on the seat and I eventually headed back to earth arms first still rotating.
I broke both the radius and ulna, messing up my radius pretty badly next to the wrist. Waiting 3 hours at the ER, finally 3 doctors were assembled to put it back in place. I did not want anesthesia, so I was awake for the procedure. One held my elbow, another grabbed my hand and rotated and pulled the radius back in to place, the third applied the cast.
After another X-ray, they were happy with the new bone location. Two days later, an orthopedist said otherwise. He also said as it was, I wouldn’t have good use of my hand. So, I went in for surgery and have a titanium plate, which is noticeable, but doesn’t give me enough problems to want them to remove it.
