what are some good charities to donate to?

so, i will be doing a service project to earn my eagle scout soon and for my project i am hosting a concert with some local bands and things like that, i have not decided where the proceeds will go yet(i was maybe thinking the buy me a new uni fund:p )…but seriously…

what are some worthy organazations?

BSA…
NRA

My two favorite charities are the National Multiple Sclerosis Society and the Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance.

Both organizations would gladly accept your contributions, and both work tirelessly to make every dollar count toward fulfillment of their mission. Both organizations are focused on work that both benefits society today, and seeks to benefit generations to come.

There are many many great non-profit organizations, doing outstanding work. The important thing is giving…to whichever charity rings true in your heart.

TB

you could always donate to the “Get Blake a Qu-ax fund.”
just send me the money thru paypal.

KidsAlive is a great charity. I went out to Kenya with them during the summer to one of their orphanages and they do some amazing work out there. They have homes all over the world housing kids at risk. Take a look at their website: Kidsalive.com

They’d welcome any contribution you can give.

Charity begins at home:

Arvada Community Food Bank

Habitat for Humanity of Metro Denver

Help the GLBT youth who were banned by the Boy Scouts

Gay Mens Health Crisis is a good one for an Eagle Scout.

Or the Yes Institute for GLBT Youth:
Vision - A community in which all youth develop as healthy individuals free of suicide, violence and discrimination.

Mission - To prevent suicide and ensure the healthy development of gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender (GLBT) and all youth by initiating dialogue, providing education, and creating support systems.

Work - We work in dynamic partnerships with individuals and organizations that have a commitment to creating a safer world for all youth. Schools, parent groups, healthcare settings, justice departments, clergy, and non-profit organizations contact YES Institute seeking non-confrontational communication and innovative education and training on gender, orientation, leadership and communication.

What we do:
Dialogue for Purposeful Action

YES Institute helps people begin a dialogue on gender and orientation, focusing on the shared purpose of safety for all youth. We facilitate open, inclusive discussions that honor all points of view. YES provides trained facilitators and speakers to organizations and individuals struggling with these topics or silenced by fear.

Powerful Education Courses

YES Institute offers groundbreaking innovative workshops on gender, orientation, communication and leadership. Universities from around the country seek our materials as the most up-to-date and innovative on these topics.

YES Institute courses are open to everyone and offer Continuing Education Units (CEU) to teachers, counselors, registered nurses, clinical social workers and mental health professionals. YES Institute is accredited by the Florida Department of Health, Miami-Dade and Monroe County Public School Systems/ Department of Education, Roaring Fork Schools in Colorado and the North Georgia College and State University as a Continuing Education Provider.

Youth Leadership Training
YES Institute SAFE-T Course was created specifically for young people. This training empowers youth to create change in their environments and connect authentically with their families. Their life experiences become powerful testimony that makes a difference, not something they need to resist or endure. Youth learn to use the power of their own voice as speakers for YES, and often continue to become workshop leaders.

Corporate Training

“Everything happens out of our relationship with others”

YES Institute Working Unity Workshop is an innovative course that redefines diversity and moves beyond the call to “celebrate differences” by revising it to “generating new levels of understanding and relatedness”.

This is a fundamental shift, from what we think to how we think about race, gender, orientation, and all notions that separate us.

Working Unity is a customized training workshop delivered in the context of a particular corporation’s environment, policies and needs. This workshop is designed to help businesses provide a workplace environment where all employees relate authentically and work together productively.

Replication and Leadership Training

YES Institute Mentoring Model Program is offered to individuals and organizations seeking to replicate our models in their area or community. This program includes a format to replicate YES Institute models, education and resource materials, communication and leadership training, “train the trainer” education and ongoing coaching.

I have been considering doing the food bank, and instead of charging an admission price i would ask that they bring cans of food and then donate the food to the food bank.

Good idea.

They’d prolly gay bash you if you went with those gay charities.

Then you wouldn’t be an Eagle Scout.

The highest achievement in that hate group.

I would actually do something like that just to show the anti-gay people at the scouts. Although many scouts want to reject the anti-gay rules, and it is really the Catholic and Mormon churches that sponsor/own the Boy Scouts that require that rule.

If I was going to be an Eagle Scout, I would, as my “project,” quit the scouts, and take as many friends with me because of their hateful religious and anti-gay rules.

I would like to suggest you take up your anti-Boy Scout issue with the ADULTS who make the rules, not a 17-year-old who is trying to accomplish something that will make a positive impact in his community.

This thread was started as a good faith effort by a young man who wants to help his community and, as often happens around here, it turned political.

Richard Wertz
Eagle Scout, 1969

We want to teach him to be a good silent citizen.

Good idea, Richard.

We want to teach him to be a good silent citizen. To accept hatred and bigotry, so he fits in.

And to sit by silently while hate groups exclude and oppress.

Another option would be to rub their dirty faces in their own hatred and bigotry. Just an option that a member of such a group may not see.

You want to accomplish something that will make a positive impact in the community. Try speaking truth to power. Try teaching peace.

Good idea, Richard.

Amen. Or not Amen, depending on your religion.

whoa now, hold on, some of you just assumed since I am a boy scout i must be a bigot and hate gays, neither of which are true.
In my troop I have NEVER heard any racial slurs, or any anti-gay type material. If i ever had encountered any of that i can assure you i would not be a Boy Scout.
I am a Boy Scout because I have grown up with the other guys in the troop and I enjoy hiking, whitewater rafting, climbing, camping and things like that with my lifelong freinds.
I am earning my eagle scout partly because I set a goal to earn it when i was younger and I am so close now that I am just going to go for it, and mostly i am getting it because it was My granddads dying wish…

I DO NOT agree with the hateful things that go on within the boy scouts (which i haven’t seen) I love all people, because i am a person, being a boy scout does not make anyone a bigot. Being an ignorant jerk makes one a bigot.

Now, for what the topic was about,

What is the Gay Men’s Health Crisis?

The Yes Institute for GLBT Youth sounds like they are a good organazation, i am all for the betterment of society, especially getting rid of violence and discrimination. The only problem may be getting the people who I have to get to sign my project off as “OK” to recognize that the cause is very worthwhile. I don’t know the board of persons who have to ok my project, but being pretty high up in scouting I can somewhat assume they may be some of the people who are ignorant jerks.

good for you for thinking clear!

Please, no such assumptions about you or any individual member of the organization. and good for you for thinking clear!

Agreed. If you want to make a difference at home, donate to charities that do work in your neighborhood, or in nearby towns and cities. The United Way is a collaboration of many small charities and working groups; donating to the United Way is an effective way of putting money back into your local community.

has been supporting nonviolence and social justice since 1974; the A J Muste Memorial fund.

They get a good rating, too.
