Want to buy used unicycle for learning

I’d like to try unicycling. Does anyone have any advice about where I can buy a
used unicycle? Or what size I need?

I tried searching some web pages, but all the useful stuff seems to point to
www.unicycling.org”, which I can’t get to. (Is it down temporarily?)

I’ve seen some new ones for sale for around $150, but I was hoping to start out
lower until I find out if I can actually learn how to ride the thing! (I didn’t
learn to juggle until I was 30, so maybe there is still hope that I can learn to
unicycle at 38…)

Also, I have four kids aged 3-9. What age is it reasonable to teach a kid to
unicycle? And will I have to buy a smaller model?

Thanks for any advice,

RE: Want to buy used unicycle for learning

Unicycling.org seems to be having some difficulties as I just tried to access
it. You can find new unicycles on the Web for as low as $80 or so (brauns.com),
but you get what you pay for. You might find a better unicycle (like an old
Schwinn) for the same money at ebay.com.

Thanks…I have looked at eBay for the last couple weeks, but haven’t seen much.

What do you mean by “you get what you pay for”? Would a cheapie be harder to
learn on, or would it just not last as long?

If the latter, then that’s fine – if I can convince myself that I can actually
learn how to do it by using a cheap one, then I wouldn’t mind plunking down $150
or whatever for one that will last longer.

Thanks,

RE: Want to buy used unicycle for learning

My daughter has a cycle design (one of the many Taiwanese unis)
and I wish I had spent the money up front to get her Miyata (or
Semcycle) The difference in quality is really dramatic. She
rides less than I do but the seat is coming apart after less
than a year and it just does not ride as well. (IMHO)

I initially learned on a Schwinn many years ago a thought that
was a great uni, but for me the Miyata has been an absolute joy.

Re: Want to buy used unicycle for learning

I asked the same question here just about a month ago. The majority of people
that replied recommended the Miyata so I ordered one for my son. It came in the
mail this week and my son is thrilled with it. I was impressed with the way it
is constructed the uni looks like it will last him a good long time and it came
with a seat post extension so it will grow with him.
