I will be back in Central Texas for about 2 weeks around Easter!
Anyone up for meeting for a ride?
From April 15th-25th in New Braunfels. So only the weekend of the 19th/20th (and during the week before and after).
Right now it looks like we will be bringing Munis but will not have freestyle unicycles (plane).
Will definitely ride the Madrone Trail out at Canyon Lake. Might make it up to Austin to ride Barton Creek or Emma Long (fun technical with so many rock ledges!). And also up for trying something new if there are any new trails since my last visit about 2 years ago.
Pretty much any level, as my older daughter and I are pretty strong DH muni riders, my younger is technically strong but doesnāt like to ride so long.
Sean has said he will probably make a trip out from College Station for a freestyle session (Jacob is currently here studying in Munich).
Count me in! I should be able to make it down there Saturday, April 19. Iāll likely stay in a hotel Friday night, as Canyon Lake is a 5 hour drive for me.

Hello from Austin!
Iām not familiar with those. I do mostly road riding and some light/flowy muni. Iām up for trying new locations, though ārock ledgesā sounds a bit beyond me TBH.
Walnut Creek Metro Park has a nice paved multi-use trail, and a lot of mountain bike trails with good variety ranging from easy flowy stuff I can handle to pretty intense mountain bike trails that I canāt
.
South walnut creek trail has a pleasant paved multi-use trail, and a few offroad offshoots.
Thereās a 10 mile loop downtown around ladybird lake that can be fun, but gets very crowded on the weekend.
circuit of the americas (f1 track) tuesday bike nights could be worth checking out Bike Night at COTA - Cycle The Circuit - Register Now. TBH the course itself is just ok - rolling hills on a paved course with no shade - but being out there on an f1 track and with a bunch of bicyclists having fun and gaping at you on a unicycle is a somewhat unique experience and can be fun.
The veloway is also a fun closed course paved bike loop. Not as epic as circuit of the americas, but generally more scenic and pleasant, and free.
PM me if you end up in Austin and want to go for a ride!
P.S. if you want to join me for one of the road/paved options I could probably loan some unis for the ride. See profile for my inventory
Yeah, Emma Long Metropolitan Park aka City Park is pretty technical. Itās not what I would call downhill (I live in the Alps) but rocky. From part of the description āLedges. This place is known for its advanced terrain that is full of ledges to challenge your technical climbing and descending skills.ā Itās actually a motocross trail although there are now more mountain bikes than moto. Hmm⦠I was just going to comment that I wonāt have a fun road uni, although as I will likely take my 29 muni I could bring 89 cranks for the road⦠Although a loaner would probably work well. Iāll have to see what develops as itās also a family trip, so canāt commit to getting up to Austin yet. But will try and get in touch.

I can meet yāall at Barton Creek or Emma Long, also.
Nathan, I can bring a 29ā (114mm cranks) road unicycle or Jacobās Nightfox 36ā for you to borrow if yāall wanted to do a road ride.
So, sorry for not answering but weāve been busy with lots of unicycling: two competitions the last weekends (urban and freestyle).
Looks like we will be bringing 4 unicycles:
- 2 freestyle unis for the kids (probably a seatpost long enough for me)
- my wifeās 24 muni
- and my 29 muni with 110/136 and probably also 89mm cranks for road.
As we have a bunch of family stuff I canāt yet make any definite plans for Austin, but I think it should work out (I assume you guys can mostly only do weekends, so that would be the 19th and 20th).
With the 89mm cranks I should also be able to do some road too (about the same gearing as 107mm on a 36" so not too slow but of course less comfortable than cruising on a 36").
Otherwise if anyone is in the area around New Braunfels, the Madrone Trail out at Canyon Lake is pretty good (I would say better then the Greenbelt in Austin but not as technical as Emma Long/City Park). Itās mostly XC with short climbs and no real downhill but quite a few technical sections with some small rock features.
The Madrone Rail sounds great! Iāll likely bring my 27.5 Oracle, or my 24/26 Large Marge fat tire uni. Of course, if the plan turns out to be a 29ā or 36ā road ride, I can bring one of those.
Iām looking forward to riding seeing you/riding with you again!
Itās nice to have choices, isnāt it?

So⦠Saturday afternoon we will be at a family picnic in New Braunfels.
So we could probably do freestyle or muni at Canyon Lake either Friday afternoon and/or Saturday morning, e.g. freestyle Friday afternoon/evening in New Braunfels at Landa Park and muni on the Madrone Trail at Canyon Lake early Saturday morning (or vice versa).
And then probably go you Austin on Sunday (unless we would rather meet in New Braunfels which would also work fine for me). Maybe muni at Emma Long/City Park and then a road ride near Town Lake/downtown (or somewhere better).
I can meet you at Canyon Lake either Friday afternoon/evening or Saturday morning. Friday might work better, but I can make both work.
The Austin bit on Sunday sounds good to me! Looking at the Emma Long trail I think I can give it a shot; I might just wimp out on some of the features
and we can figure out if/what road ride you want to do afterwards from there.
Iāll probably use my 29+100/125/150 for the muni bit. For a road ride I can ride that or my 36+114/139/164 and loan out the other.
Iāll PM with my contact info!
Iām in Austin, too. Iāll be out of town this weekend, but will be back Monday and can coordinate a ride. MUC, whatās your first name? Are you from Memphis? We may have met at the Memphis NAUCC.
Emma Long is amazing and very technical. Itās what the trials motorcycle guys ride.
Hi Reid, we rode together at Unicon in Bemidji. Iām Nathan currently in Germany.
Oh yeah. Itās great to hear from you again, Nathan! Iāll PM you to coordinate a ride after this weekend.
Great! Iāll meet you Saturday morning. I plan to arrive between 8:45a and 9:00a.
So we rode about 1/3 of the Madrone Trail today: the entire first shorter loop and then parts of the middle connector and end, probably about 4 miles totat (I forgot to load my smartwatch battery and left the phone tracting on the car, so no good data). The trail is in great shape (although I have never seen the lake level so low in my life! But doesnāt effect the unicycling).
Itās rocky with quite a few technical sections so be prepared for frequent walking.
At first I had 110mm cranks on my 29", and while that may be faster if you are very fit, I think a slightly lower gearing is better (as my only other option I used 136mm and was pretty good). I think I must have hit a cactus or something else sharp, as about 2 hours after the ride I had too little air to ride.
