One more vote against the Stadium saddle. I bought a 27.5 mountain in December, and have come to love it, but the saddle is punishing at first. Recommend you adjust it forward as far as possible upon purchasing, and wear padded shorts. You will still likely have to go through a break-in period, but it will improve. If it weren’t for the fact that I spend half my riding time out of the saddle I probably would have had to switch to something else by now.
Thanks.
I got the 27.5 and, so far, so good. I still didn’t upgrade the seat. I wish I could test them out first, but it’s okay.
Do you mean shifting it towards A or B in the image below? I assume A, but wanted to check. And you mean just use the slider room by the bolts right?
Yes, A, with the bolts. It probably won’t move more than 1/8 of an inch, but it makes a difference.
Many find that adding spacer washers on the front between the saddle and seat post works well to raise the nose of the saddle. The more the nose is raised, the more weight is transferred toward the back of the saddle. This puts more weight on the sit bones and less on the more sensitive areas.
Actually, I find it pleasant off road (with padded shorts) as the nose is much longer. Riding whilst grabbing it gives you more control. It’s like having a mini handlebar as it’s further away compared to a KH Freeride saddle for example.
You could also consider “test driving” your Nimbus II as a Muni as well. It has an ISIS hub that will take all sorts of abuse, so it’s fine for dirt. Find a MTB tire that will fit, and see how you like it. This may help you decide on wheel size for your next purchase.
BTW, for dirt riding, make sure your tire isn’t a tight squeeze in the frame. It needs at least 1/8" on each side, and I’d say at least 3/8" on top for clearing mud and junk if you ride in wet areas. I started out doing Muni on a 24 x 1.75 tire and had a blast! But that’s because there weren’t many choices available at the time, and Muni wasn’t even a word yet.
For your purchase, I’d go for 27.5" for better tire choices. My current Muni is 26" and I feel like I’ve been left behind by the tire market. There are plenty of tires, but innovation seems to have shifted to that larger size…
Good advice, thank you.
Yes, I am actually doing what you recommend. I did buy the 27.5, but I am still using the 24 right now too. I did get a beefier tire, and have been testing it offroad. Its a great idea.
