unicycling to BMX

i’ve long been fascinated by BMX flatland/freestyling – i mean, i love unicycling, but with two wheels, handlebars, and whatnot, you seem to have a much greater variety of tricks to do … i’ve never quite tried it, but sure would like to.

i’d like to hear of any experiences you have of crossing over from unicycling to the two-wheeled world of tricks. do a lot of the skills transfer well, or is it a very different ball game?

Hi Julian,

I got myself a modified trials bike (which isn’t quite a true BMX but
close enough I reckon) and I certainly hoped some unicycle skills would be
transferable. To put things in context - when I got the 2 wheeler I hadn’t
ridden a bike in some 13 years but was very comfortable bouncing around on
my Monty uni.

The only thing I think I took from one wheel on to two was a sense of
balance which helped with track stands. However, balancing on two wheels
is different than on one and still required having to relearn to a certain
extent. The mechanics of other moves on two wheels also is very different
from those on a unicycle. There’s a wider choice of tricks you can do on a
BMX than a trials bike so maybe those done when on the rear tyre might be
a bit easier but only just - the handlebars just get in the way

I definitely felt safer on a unicycle than on a bike - when you bail on a
uni you’re able to run / jump clear of it but with a bike you have those
flaming handlebars in the way! You also tend to be traveling faster on a
bike than on a uni so any wipeouts will be bigger.

In the end I decided that the time it would take to learn stuff on the
bike would take too much away from unicycling. The auction on eBay UK for
the trials bike should close today and get me the cash for a Profile hub
for my Monty uni.

To sum up… it’s a different ball game (for me at least) and handlebars
are a pain (literally in some cases).

Cheers, Neil
