Unicyclers use Linux?

Im finding with more and more unicyclists that I meet , that they are Linux
users. I think I saw some video of Lutkus with a penguin sweater on.

Does Linux and Unicycling have some sort of connection?

They’re fun, do-it-yourself pastimes that attract independent thinkers. I’m curious how many unicycling penguins exist too.

Tolerance for long steep learning curves. Fondness for coolness.

Re: Unicyclers use Linux?

Most of the unicyclists I’ve come in contact with have technical backgrounds
particularly in the field of computer science. And jugglers I’ve heard
typically have a strong interest in mathematics.

Kinda cool.

The system is going down for reboot NOW!

Unicyclist have the benefit of having both hands free so I suppose a laptop isn’t impossible. I think I’ll stick to PalmOS. At least I can put it into my pocket when I get to a tricky descent.

It is rumored that Claude Shannon was trying to load linux before he passed but couldn’t get over the flaming he received when he posted a newbie question on alt.os.linux WITHOUT FIRST READING THE FAQ. Apparently they were not impressed with his “Bell Labs Unicyclists Rock!” signature.

Also, I’ve heard that Sebastian Hoeher is often heard muttering under his breath, “Linux gut, Windows schlecht”.

I’m a FreeBSD user and supporter. See…

programming = control many processes
juggling = control many processes
many unicyclists do juggle
many unicyclists use *ux

or is it that many unicyclist like to be in control of situations that initially seems to be impossible to control
(like gravity, computers -when you don’t know else than PC-, etc.)

oh bytheway who has problems viewing the results of:
dig @ns2.unicycle.net unicycle.net txt

It’s a unicycle:

tinydns allows to use octal code, and so you can make the returns.
Everyone running BIND should try this program, especially those who use it i.c.w. My/SQL.

All,

I’ve also used Linux in the past; however more recently I’ve been using FreeBSD. I also use XP on my gaming machine, but I often have a Unix box at home. At work I also use both Linux and FreeBSD and Win2k, depending on what I’m doing, and what my mood is (I re-OS my machine every few months just for fun; and its a coin toss as to which of the 3 end up on the box).

Lewis

I mainly use Windoze but I’m an occasional Linux user, I’ve given FreeBSD a go too and I was an AmigaOS user (still emulate for retro games) and I’ve also been known to dabble with the fruity OS (emulated).

Although not my official job title I like to call myself a ‘Digital Glazier’ because I spend most of my time either installing or fixing windows (the M$ variety)

I don’t see any real relationship between unicycling and Linux other than that most unicyclist I meet seem to be quite technically capable and are willing to try new things.

Cheers, Gary

I am another Unicycling Linux User.

I’m another Linux user (for about 7 years now) but I’ve
been riding longer than that. The main reason I became a
Linux user was that it provided me with an interface I’m
used to (I use/have used Solaris, IRIX, HPUX, UNICOS,
SUPER-UX for work).

I can’t really see any unicycle/Linux connection save that
both seem to appeal to the “techie” end of the spectrum.

I like Linux, but I’m a novice at it. I have to use a Mac at the office. I have a windows laptop and I can’t switch it back to Linux. I’m interested in trying FreeBSD too.

Linux is great since its open source and you can get it for nothing. And it runs fine on older pc’s. That way, you can maximize your computer and save money for new uni gear at the same time!

RE: Unicycling Linux User

i read that the first time as “unicycling unix luser”, sorry :frowning:

although i haven’t bothered to get xfree86 4.whatever to accept the modelines i had working fine with 3.5, and haven’t gotten xinerama set up to support my two monitors since my last hardware upgrades, linux [slackware, for those curious] .is. installed on both my desktop and laptop machines.

tally another half-mark in the *nix unicyclists column.

a luser myself,
John M

Re: Unicyclers use Linux?

Thank you all for your Linux-Unicycle remarks. I posted the question because
discovering Linux (last year) is the best thing to happen to me since
discovering Unicycling (two years ago). I saw that many others in the
comminity share in this. They really both are great, and play a large part
in my life.

Happy uni and happy hacking!

I also use GNU/Linux, but I don’t have a penguin sweater. :frowning:

GNU is the actually the largest part of what is known as a Linux
distribution. Linux is only a kernel. GNU is the rest of the operating
systems plus many applications. See http://www.gnu.org/.

>Does Linux and Unicycling have some sort of connection?

Freedom, challenge and respect.

GNU/Linux provides the freedom to compute whatever and however you want,
meet the challenge of doing so and be respected for doing it with open
(one) source. (Since the source is open everyone can use the same one.)

Unicycling provides the freedom to ride wherever and however you want,
meet the challenge of doing so and be respected for doing it on one
wheel.

I’m sure others can add to this connection.

Sincerely,
