Unicycle identification required

Hi,

I got into an argument with a friend (who should be reading this) about
what one of my unicycles is called whilst at the Bradford convention
this saturday. We figured the easiest way to resolve the problem was to
post here and ask for your collective wisdom. We can then laugh at me
for not knowing what it is called when I own one, or else laugh at his
weird name for it

As Iā€™m writing this, I might as well drop into the conversation that I
managed to free mount it on saturday and can now do so reasonably
consistently. I can also idle a little - around 6/7 forwards/backwards
rotations of the pedals, but only from a wall - if I try and stop and
idle I come straight offā€¦

Cheers,

Roger

thats not fair you are trying to sway the readers by naming the file uni.jpg!

iā€™ve heard those being called a variety of names
the variety normally increases as the unsucesfull attempts at riding one increasesā€¦

mostly i think theyā€™re called two-wheelers altho ā€˜two-wheeled giraffeā€™ might fly as well

Re: Unicycle identification required

No better way to tap our collective wisdom than through a RSU Google Groups search.

If a cycle has two wheels, there are basically three options for their relative location:

A. one front, one rear: bicycle, or bike
B. one left, one right: dicycle
C. one top, one bottom as in the present question:

  • two-wheeler (245)
  • two-wheeled unicycle (65)
  • double wheeler (16)
  • stacked uni (6)
  • two-wheeled uni (6)
  • two-wheeled giraffe (4)
  • stacked unicycle (2)

The numbers in between brackets are the number of hits Google reports. Note that Google doesnā€™t distinguish between a dash (-)and a space ( ) between two words. The spelling chosen in the above list is the most common, I think.

There are possibly more names for such a thing but these are the ones I could think of.

Klaas Bil

Updated list:

  • two-wheeler (245)
  • 2-wheeler (102)
  • two-wheeled unicycle (65)
  • double wheeler (16)
  • 2wheeler (9)
  • stacked uni (6)
  • two-wheeled uni (6)
  • biverticycle (5)
  • two-wheeled giraffe (4)
  • twowheeler (3)
  • stacked unicycle (2)
  • two-stack uni (1)

As before, this is based on Google Groups restricted to RSU. Just to confuse anyone as to what THE name is for, errr, such a thing.

Roger can you resolve your argument with this?

Klaas Bil

BTW After this thread makes it to Google Groups, the numbers will all be increased!

Iā€™ve heard germans call it a twice.

I had never heard that until this afternoon (itā€™s 5 pm here), when I read that possible name on your website describing your two-wheeler riding. But imagine what happens if you search for the word ā€œtwiceā€. I tried!

Klaas Bil

Edit: you also mentioned ā€œdouble deckerā€ on your site, but this gets 0 counts on rsu as the name for the thing weā€™re after. There were some ā€œdouble deckerā€ hits but they referred to buses. - KB

unicycle.com has them, they even have 3 wheeled ones

here is the url

I think iā€™m going to look like a bit of a pillock when I let you know what i was INSISTING on calling itā€¦ Doesnā€™t appear on any google search, even with different spellings. Think i may have invented a new wordā€¦

BTW I had a go on it @ Bradford and its impossible to ride!

Impossible, just like the first time you tried to ride a regular unicycle.

Well I think soā€¦ Andy came up with ā€œinverticycleā€, for some unknown
reason. Myself, I use of the three at the top of your list. inverticycle
doesnā€™t appear on google at all.

Is that uni made by DM?

We still have this contraption in our inventory.

Weā€™ve never seen another one like it. Iā€™m told that the musical group The Monkeys were pictured riding these on the front cover of one of their albums once.

Has anyone ever seen one of these?

Bruce

Those have been known best by calling them
double wheelers.

Gilby is the best rider I have ever seen riding one. Ken Fuch and Connie Cotter have impressed me
as well as far back as 1987 on them.

There are also triple wheelers and as many as 13
wheelers have been made and ridden.

I have a penta (five) wheeler. Even with itā€™s small 12" wheels, itā€™s still 7 feet tall.

Yes.

As noted on the unicycle.com page, the semcycle ones appear to be
unavailable.

The Monkees did have something that looked like that but it would have to be at least 40 years
old to be like theirs.

The ones they rode had a mag wheel. I have some
cards (like baseball cards) with pictures of the Monkees riding them.

The pedals were on the big wheel like a tricycle.
The little wheels were out back on the ones they rode.

There is also a Skate-Bike that looks like that as well. The difference is that the skate bike rides in the other direction. The rider sits over the bike wheel on the back and the skateboard trucks/wheels are out front. The pedals would be between the bike wheel and skateboard wheels mounted in a bottom bracket like a bicycle.

They were sold by many different companies under many different names. Some had hand brakes, some had coaster brakes. At the trade shows they even had videos of riders doing neat stuff on them.
They never did take off like the aluminum folding scooters did a few years ago.

They cleared them out at Big Lots 10 years ago for 10.00 or less when they couldnā€™t sell them anymore.

If you can post another clearer brighter picture of yours, that would be cool.

Thanks,
Darren

It has also been callede an oxymorocycle, since a two-wheeled unicycle is something of an oxymoron.
I prefer biverticycle.

It was a DM two wheeler. One hell of a well built machine, beautiful
piece of kit, and the one I will go for when I eventualy, if ever, get
good enough, brave enough or daft enough to try one.

Nao

I have never had any qualms about calling these multiple stacked wheeled things ā€œunicyclesā€ because the number of wheels they have notwithstanding, they ride with only one wheel in contact with the ground and behave like unicycles - or so I imagine, since like Naomi I have as of yet never been good, brave, or daft enough to try one.

Darren,

Iā€™ve not seen the Monkeysā€™ picture, although Iā€™d like to. The unit we have is pretty old, but Iā€™m not sure exactly how old it is. The seller years ago told us that he had it in his attic for years and also had parts to another one.

Iā€™m familiar with the other unit you mentioned, a popular brand is LeRun. Iā€™ve sat briefly on one but it complained so I got off. The boys have ridden them with limited success. They are cute to look at at first but they quickly go into hibernation in the backs of garages for lack of functionability.

Iā€™ll try to get a couple pictures of our Uni-skate and post them here.
