Unicycle ID

Last year I got this 24" unicycle used at $100 (CAD). Was thinking that any Nimbus would be a good deal at this price. The cycle was (and still is) in great shape and is my main unicycle currently. As I get better at it I wonder what its limit is and what I should (and should not) do to it. I’m thinking jumping 20cm at most and light muni/trail use. Would be helpful to look the specs up but I couldn’t identify it on unicycle.com, its archive, and the internet in general, though. Can anyone help me learn more about my gear? At one point I thought it was a Nimbus X but mine has a 25.4mm seatpost and the Nimbus X is specced at 22.2mm.

That might explain that oddball seat post diameter.

Take a picture of the crank where it goes into the hub. I am afraid that is not an ISIS spline hub. This is standard on most high performance unicycles. Not only the strongest design, but allows for many parts swapping.

Nice tires. I believe they are called “hook worm” mainly for using on roads, but not so great off road.

Be careful doing any hops unlike a bicycle the unicycle wheel takes full weight of our bodies. Spokes will be breaking.

This is a close-up of the seat post clamp. Some kind of Frankenstein? I had a Torker Unistar CX before briefly (hated the seat, sold it quick) and this is definitely not like it.

The cranks are 125mm Qu-Ax branded.

Straight up Nimbus unicycle, with Nimbus standard 25.4 seat post. ISIS hub.

It looks like it has Quax Lite cranks, but they are likely branded as Nimbus on the outside. Check the inside of the cranks to see if they say QUAX and the length in millimeters. If that is the case, then the unicycle is likely an older Nimbus Road unicycle from 2007/8/9ish and will likely withstand anything you can throw at it, riding-wise (other than trials, flatland, or urban tricks continuously).

Your limitation as far as Muni goes, will be the strength of the aluminum cranks and the possible lack of clearance for a Muni tire.

In my opinion, ride it as hard as you desire.

Thanks for your help - the inside of the cranks are indeed marked with QuAx and its length (125mm).

What I’m unsure is whether the hub is cotterless or ISIS, whether the rim is double walled, and that I’ve not seen any picture of a Nimbus with “caps” on the crown. I guess the answer to the first question shouldn’t matter much for normal bumpy rides without big (>1 ft) drops?

Tyre-wise it’s already got a 24x2.5 on with some clearance so I figure at most 24x2.8 wouldn’t be a problem?

“Hops!” Brings back old memories. I have a 1963 Lyod (yes, only 1 “L”) 20" unicycle that is the pre-runner to the Schwinn 20". Schwinn bought out Lyod and redesigned the 20" by dumping the pinned cranks, replacing the rectangular vinyl seat and going with their fantastic banana seat that I still have and going strong. They also upgraded that cheap single layer Lyod rim with Schwinn’s patented tubular rim (great for hoping all day long). 73 and still jumping on it occasionally, with emphasis on the “occasionally!”. Refurbished it 3 years ago. Replaced the post, pins, cranks, and pedals. Went with stainless steel spokes, and re-chromed the original Lyod 36-spoke pinned hub.

P.S. I bought it from a neighbor in since 1964. Rode in many parades and performed at the Del Mar Fair (currently the San Diego County County Fair) specializing in Basketball on Unicycles.

Looking at it a little closer I think the UDC CrMo hub is a square cotterless instead of ISIS. It should still be quite strong enough, I may jump with it a little or use it as a light duty muni.
