was the actual descent 14000 feet? or is the trailhead quite a bit higher than sea level?

I enjoyed reading that. Any geologists around who can explain to me why ,
from the pictures, I gain the impression that the whole mountain is composed
of head sized lumps of rock? It looks in some pics like a huge spoil
heap.
