UNICON MUni fun rides

I have updated the muni ride info on the web. Everything is good except for the info on Saint Edward State Park and the Snoqualmie Summit. I’ll have the Saint Edward info ready by the time the convention starts. There is not much to say about the Summit other than you get your lift ticket, pick up a map at the counter, and go ride.

Trail info is at
<http://backcountry.unicyclist.com/UNICON/MuniFunRides.html>

The Tiger Mountain rides will be good. They’re challenging and strenuous trails. And they’re close.

The Coker riders might want to take a look at the Snoqualmie Valley Trail and the Iron Horse Trail. Someone is going to have to do the entire ride from the summit down to Mount Si High School. It’s only 32 miles. Very doable on a Coker.

It will be interesting to see how many people want to go on the muni rides. I’m not sure how many people will be making the time to go off-site and muni for most of the day. I know many people will be busy doing competitive events. If a whole lot of people show up wanting to do the rides it will get interesting. It will be a cooperative effort to make it all work.

There are muni rides scheduled for most days during NAUCC and UNICON. The plan is to meet at 9:00 am at either Mount Si High School or Issaquah High School and head off for a ride. We’re on our own for transportation to the muni rides so you’ll need a car or get with someone to carpool.

Most of the rides are intermediate to advanced in difficulty. If there are a lot of beginner level riders we’ll plan an additional day at Saint Edward where everyone can have fun. But most rides are going to be geared for the intermediate to advanced riders who can handle the distance and terrain.

I’ll have a bulletin board set up at Mount Si High School with the muni ride info on it. We can have ride signups there, carpool signups there, and a way to leave me messages there. We’ll probably have a meeting on the 26th so the people interested in the muni rides can plan what rides to do on what days. There are more trails listed on my web page than we’ll be able to fit in during UNICON, so we’ll need to pick ones that are good for the group.

I have most of the rides well documented and mapped so people are free to take the info and go ride a trail on their own (or in their own small group) if they don’t want to do the group muni rides.

If you have any questions or comments about the muni fun rides post it here or email me at john_childs [at] hotmail [dot] com

I hope my legs survive the two conventions.

Re: UNICON MUni fun rides

John, this sounds great - I and many others are pretty much interested in
90% Muni rides and 10% other stuff. Many of us are staying up at the Pass -
and since I’ve been there I know there is great riding. We weren’t really
thinking of coming down to either High School each day. I think the idea of
a meeting on the 26th is best. We’ll arrive just about at the start of the
opening ceremony. Let’s setup the meeting time/place for the 26th then.

Thanks for all the work on this, and see you very soon!

Re: Re: UNICON MUni fun rides

The reason for the rides leaving from the high schools is that the inter-venue transportation will drop people off at the high schools in the morning. On the freestyle days the busses will drop people off at Mount Si High School in Snoqualmie. On the track days the busses will drop people off at Issaquah High School. I scheduled the muster area, where we will group together for each ride, to be at the high school where the people are. On freestyle days we will group up at Mount Si HS. On track days we will group up at Issaquah HS. That will make it possible for the people who do not have a car to make it to the rides. At the high school we’ll organize carpools for the people who do not have a car. The plan is to leave the HS at around 9:00 am each morning to head out for the days ride.

Most of the rides I have scheduled are on the west side of the pass anyways. The only muni rides east of North Bend are the Summit Mountain Biking Center and Rat Pac near Cle Elum.

Let’s have a meeting Frideay July 26th at 9:00 am at Mount Si High School to figure out the muni rides. We’ll figure out what rides we’ll do during the week and get a feel for how many people will be going on the rides. Then after the meeting we’ll head out for a muni ride.

I am very interested in joining the fun rides (sunday and monday, hopefully) and I will be one of the people without a car needing a carpool. I want to mention this because I will arrive Friday afternoon and will miss your meeting that morning.

Thanks, guys…

Saturday July 27th is the Seattle City ride so no muni that day.
Sunday the 28th will likely be a ride at the Summit because the lift should be open that day.
Monday the 29th I want to watch the expert freestyle competitions so if there is a muni ride it will be a quickie in the morning.

You don’t need to be an expert muni rider to ride down the ski slopes at the Summit. Greg Harper posted his ride summary of his ride at the Summit and he obviously had a lot of fun there. Greg just started muni riding and is proof that you don’t need to be an expert to have a lot of fun on the ski slopes.

At a minimum, you should be able to get in a good muni ride on Sunday.

Thanks for organizing these Muni rides John.

See Friday morning @ 9am, we’ll be there with bells on. (that’s just an expression)

9am! Are you sure you want muni riders to be there? Can’t we meet sometime
in the late afternoon or evening in a bar, when we’re all awake and
relaxed  I’m surposed to be on hoilday arn’t I?

If you do meet at 9am, can someone report back to the Sahalie bunch once
we have woken up?

See you there, if the jet lag allows.

Hey, that’s pretty much the ideal schedule for me. Maybe I should just find you and carpool

Since I arrive Friday afternoon and leave Tuesday evening, that would give me 1 and a half days of muni fun ride and two days of general convention activities (well, one day and two half days) and one day of Seattle. Now, true kismet would be if they schedule the workshops I want during the times I have set for general convention time. I might just make my measly 4 and a half days worthwhile.

Re: Re: UNICON MUni fun rides

You’re not allowed to sleep in during a convention. The only time during the year that I wake up early is during conventions and muni weekends.

I’ll look for you on the 26th. I can go up to Sahalie on Friday evening and we can talk about muni plans for the week. Figure out a good time for a group meeting on Friday and I’ll go up to Sahalie. I’d love to see some UK and European riders on the muni rides.

Re: UNICON MUni fun rides

Worry not Sarah. I’m sure I can find a large pan and something to hit it
with to wake you up. It’s that or a bucket of water / left over beer I’m
afraid

I’ve been working on my camelbak recipe to cater for the early starts:

1 part coffee (that’s granules - without any water)
1 part beer (for hair of the dog)
1 part red bull

Hey Sarah. Why don’t I just have you babysit my 10 week old. He’s been getting up real consistant @ 5am. He doesn’t need much; just warm milk, a clean diper and tons of hugs. No wait I’m getting my son mixed up with my Muni buddy Nick.

Why not, coz after Unicon I’m going to vist all my little neices and
nephews and be Aunty. I’m good at being aunty, I get them all excited and
to the point of being sick, or needing a nappy change or crying or what
ever and then hand them back to mum or dad, which a cherry " your
daughter needs you". The biggest one is already a unicycle fan , and hes
not yet 4.
