Ultimately Free Beer at BJC

A few months back, I built myslef an ultimate wheel.

Since I have never seen anyone ride one, ever, let alone mine, it makes me kinda
wonder if its possible to ride the flippin’ thing that I built.

So as a reward, I am offering a Free Pint of Beer (or euqivalent none alcoholic
beverage if it so interests you) at this coming BJC, Bristol, UK, to the first
person to show me how to ride it.

You’ll be able to recognise me as I’ll be zooming around on my 24" DM
Ringmaster, and you can see some pics of my ugly mush on my website below.

See you there…

Simon G.

PS, I drive a ‘Y’ reg Yellow Cavalier, in case you spot me in the car park.

Re: Ultimately Free Beer at BJC

they can be ridden!

Let me tell you a tale…

Some years ago, in Evandale, Tasmania (Australia) I was quitely ridding my uni
through the village fair. This is held each year to host the Tasmanian leg of
the World Penny Farthing Championship Races and I was hired to entertain crowds.

As I rode past a BMX freestyle display team (also hired) one of them saw me,
dropped his bike and raced to the curb. He then picked up a wheel, spun it,
dropped it, hopped on and rode it along beside me!

He’d never seen a unicycle and had got the idea from a BC cartoon! It was an
interesting day from then on!

RE: Ultimately Free Beer at BJC

I’ve tried Mark W’s top tips, but since the death of my local juggling/uni club
I have not tried the beast, I just need a bit of encouragement, see-ing somebody
ride it, might just make me spend more time with it.

The other point being is that I made it myself, having never seen a proper UW,
hence this makes me wonder if its possible to ride MY UW.

Unfortunately, the free beer goes to the first and first only who can
succesfully ride my UW, say for 10 meters or so, more unfortunate for Mark, is
that I will be there friday, and friday only. Mohter in law

calls…bugger…

Cheers, Simon

It is possible. It even isn’t that hard if you follow the instructions provided
by M.Wiggins@ftel.co.uk on the uw.html-Page (where exactly is it on the net?)

[…] What do I need to learn to ride an Ultimate Wheel?

1.An ultimate wheel. Obvious one that.
2.Shin pads as worn by football (soccer) players. Not so obvious but doesn’t
take too long to discover (took me about half an hour plus 3 days to
recover).
3.Shoes that protect your ankles. As above.
4.Silicone spray. While learning to ride, the wheel will rub against your
legs. Fact of life, don’t try to avoid it just try to reduce the friction.
Spray the sides of the wheel, not your legs.
5.Old trousers or something to protect your smart ones. The wheel rubs, it
gets dirty, it gets wet when you’re playing out in the rain…

[…]

I’d like to add:
6. Wear shoes with a heel

#6. Increased my success by factor 2 (last week), #4. again by factor 3
(yesterday), so now I am freemounting and riding forward/circles/figure 8 until
I fall off because of exhaustion (lasts only a few rounds in the gym). Now I am
eager to learn some of the skills also listed in the above site. Can anyone give
some advice on idling or riding backwards, which will be the next steps?

BTW me and my friends are riding ultimate wheels by Pichler/Germany. They
changed their design to a wooden disk with glittering decoration. The price was
about DEM 500, but their products are worth the money (I own five other unis
made by them).

Hmm. If Simon learns using these tips, do I get to claim the free beer? I’ll be
there on Saturday to collect it…

OK, Georg, if this tip helps Simon, I’ll share the beer with you.

I’ve never tried riding with heeled shoes - but my wheel has very grippy pedals.
Maybe that helps.

Me too. The main problem with idling is keeping even weight on each pedal. I
haven’t yet built up the courage to try riding backwards.

Regards, Mark.
