Ultimate Wood UK

I bought an ultimate wheel kit at Cardiff, now I’m trying to find some
wood to screw it into.

Does anyone know where in the UK I can find 20mm thick plywood (preferably
in Bath or Bristol)? I’ve tried B&Q, Wickes, Homebase and Great Mills and
I can’t find anything thicker than 15mm.

look under timber supplies in the yellow pages… avoid the mass diy shops
they wont stock what they can not sell.

Doh! You’re quite right, I should have thought of that. Thanks Mini.

Danny (the man in red),

B&Q up here sold both 4’x8’ sheets and 2’x4’ sheets of plywood at 20mm and
15mm. You can use 15mm with the kits and it will be perfectly
strong enough.

I thought it would, but having measured the parts I reckon the whole thing
would look better (and have less sticky outy bits) if I used 20mm. Having
just measured the parts again, 18mm might be just as good.

I’ve also had a suggestion to use 18mm MDF (thanks Simon). Frankly, I’d
never come across MDF until I came to look in B&Q for plywood - anyone
know how it compares with plywood for strength and weight?

Looking on WWW, I’ve just found a supplier near me for 19mm moisture
resistant red MDF. Sounds great - I wouldn’t even have to go to the bother
of painting it.

There is ( was) a few proper timber merchants in the Bedminster,
southville end of Bristol. Try the yellow pages, and phone around. This is
how I found 2x2 Ash for my stilts and more recently old fashioned thin
floor boards.

have fun sarah

MDF is great for cutting - there’s no grain, and tools really zip through
it. BUT it doesn’t really have the same kind of strength as plywood. It is
excellent for decorative woodwork such as routed edging and coving, and
stuff like that. But not things which get knocked, or require rigid
strength across a reasonable span. I don’t actually know quite what you’re
planning to do (missed the first post in this thread) but I wouldn’t
advise using MDF for ramps or similar stress level items.

Also, please DO always wear a proper mask when cutting MDF in any way.
MDF dust is now known to be quite hazardous, seriously, so please do
be careful.

Moisture resistant is important; MDF ain’t too hot at withstanding the
wet. Ask exactly what ‘resistant’ means in practise before committing to
it. If in doubt, grit your teeth, find a ‘proper’ timber merchant, and
grab a paintbrush!

(Note: timber merchants are almost always going to be cheaper than any DIY
chain for wood.)

Thanks Keith. I visited the supplier of moisture resistant MDF a few weeks
ago, and noticed that they had a pile of 3’ square 18mm plywood offcuts in
the car park. So I bought one of those for 3 quid and never even asked
about the MDF.
