I’ve tried a few different protectors for ultimate wheel:
muni leg protectors - KH in particular. Unfortunately these don’t work great since as @ulkicycling puts it, the wheel tends to “attack the rear side”. I tried wearing them a bit rotated to compensate for this, but the wheel then tends to grab the protector and spin it out of the way so it can gnaw at your leg.
scrap cardboard duct taped around my legs. This is cheap and actually works really well, but requires periodic fresh duct tape.
leather “welder spats”. These are cheap and work pretty well, but are a bit floppy. The bottom part that goes over the shoe is kind of just in the way, especially if the wheel grabs and spins the whole thing. It worked a bit better for me when I grabbed some standalone velcro straps to secure them more tightly so they wouldn’t spin.
equestrian half-chaps. A nice upgrade from the welder spats, but a bit more expensive. The ones I ordered ended up being a little loose, so I end up using the velcro straps to secure these too.
Create a big notch / deburr at each end of the slit. The tube is so tight, it requires some padding around the legs or it really hurts. So cut old trousers to wear them as extra padding and oil protection between tubes and your jeans. Sunflower oil might also work.
The easier way is to ride a 36" UW, where it doesn’t scratch as much as with a 20" UW. As stated, Jeans + long underwear are enough for the 36" UW.
It was posted on the internet, it must be true!
I think I would need some more facts to buy off on this unique impressive feat. Who? When? Where? Supporting witnesses?
Google always asks to translate for Danish or German, but those languages I can read. Yet for the Korean website it doesn’t ask to translate it. I really need it there.
The Moonster knows—
life is like the ultimate wheel.
An endless field, defenders of pain popping out of nowhere,
a game you can’t pass,
and can’t turn back from.
Pain is unavoidable,
but heart and pedal become one,
giving everything, every moment—
with body, with breath, with soul.
Nothing in this world
but the ultimate
can ever fill
this hollow space in my chest—
not the rushing wind,
not the slowly setting sun.
They’re just the backdrop.
The Moonster knows,
as if the grueling ultimate is life itself,
as if the powerful pedaling is the heartbeat itself—
he spins the pedal
with his whole being,
quietly, steadily,
and without rest.
Even if nothing is promised,
the Moonster knows—
in that moment of riding,
he is truly alive.
Note: The nickname “Moonster” or “Moonstar” may be a play on his surname, MOON—either a twist on “monster” by replacing “mon” with “Moon,” or a combination of “moon” and “star.”
( Best to continue the UW talk here instead of the mirror-thread. )
With the UW36 I’m now focusing on riding slower and more controlled, which helps in making turns, but of course if you go too slowly, the wheel stalls and I drop off. The wheel rubbing is less on the 28 and 36 and I believe just by riding and getting more relaxed, you will automatically learn to keep the wheel more in the centre.
A normal uni wheel with cranks has a bigger Q-factor, which would wobble much more than a UW.
Even though I am a unicyclist, that just looks weird in my eyes. But I agree with Setonix, it‘s super impressive at the same time.
A plus is the risk of crushed nuts being very small compared to a uni.
I didn’t ride the downslope on the street because when I UPD the UW accelerates, goes on riding by itself and might hit someone or a car. @Setonix UW weights 8.1Kg and will become a scary projectile at high speeds.
