So uhm Ulkicycling , this week Im in DK, which means I will drive home on Friday through Hamburg, passing very close to your place. It would be cool to see it up close
Riding a 20" UW was 34 years ago. I was able to freemount, ride forewards while juggling and backwards without freemount on some unicycling shows. All performed with a trick to reduce the required skill. So I never had this perfect UW skill of not touching the wheel shown elsewhere here in the forum. 36" is my main unicycle, so this is my preferred size. These first freemounts reminded me of freemounting the twice (giraffe like), so the jump had to be well prepared, balanced and with some very small pre jumps to test final balance. From my experience the 36" UW is much less of a hassle to ride and much more fun than 20". The friction of the TA Tire against the trousers is no big problem, it really helps keeping balance to simply let it touch the legs.
On friday I am on earlyshift 6:45-14:45 in Hamburg. We will meet there or at home. Wanna see your smile when receiving a 36" UW
I choose to visit you at home then. According to google it is 4h 18 mins from aarhus to your place and at least I will be past the motorway drama below Hamburg. You live pretty close to the ‘7’ motorway which I take home to Bremen and it would be a nice stop. Then you can show ur tricks on the 28” that I have with me
I remember seeing a picture of one or two guys posing with that 48"(? No surely it is much bigger!) UW one of my first days on this forum (but I can’t find that post again). I didn’t even know how to react - how can you even ride something like that? Was it a proof of concept thing?
Well, now I finally know. Such amazing riding! They must also have hit every single branch in the entire woods.
Wow. I am impressed. Really flowy riding. Definitely on my future to-do-list of things to learn.
Simply big skill and very strong legs!
When I started very mellow muni in the mid 70s never would have thought to see this, bravo!
I dont have access to a rim bigger than 29 from vtt so when have sourced will consider how to build. I have a feeling that like my slackline ability which is still weak I will struggle but get good workout in the slow progress.
My knees often are sore after t t kite boarding so hope ul wheel will help not hurt!
Still pondering how to mount peddles as dont
have access alu welding but wood seems not strong enough, see unigyeser break his.
Other ideas?
And still would like to make Luna style calf supports.

I used an old 36" cocker unicycle steel rim and 20x20mm steel tube. Everything in steel. The total weight of the steel 36" UW is 8.1Kg (Steel), my normal g36 weights 8.4Kg (Aluminium, 8.1Kg on the pic is wrong). My Nimbus 19" Trial is 5.3Kg (Alu).
The heavy 36UW rides perfectly fine. Weight of the wheel is irrelevant for me as I did not notice cutting the rotating mass by the factor of 2 on my g36". The same conclusion here:
The Worlds Heaviest 36’’ Unicycle Wheel
He also notices that the rotating mass does not matter or even has many advantages while riding.
As I nod off to dream land will ponder the weight issue. In almost every movement activity that I do, many, lighter weight is a plus.
Bikes, kites, juggle, e helis, hydrofoils, skateboards, ripsticks, table tennis, most tools,
It seems logic to me that moving less weight doing most things makes sense, conservation of energy.
Although only activity where adding weight was kite buggy racing needed to keep the three wheels grounded but that was being pulled hard!
I know that using a lighter tire and tube has made my 29 much easier to idle and ride in general, I would assume, never even seen one in person let alone tested U wheel, that should be close to the same. I would agree that at speed weight at the perimeter should provide gyroscopic effect but much math and study might be needed to understand?
We know a flywheel uses weight to maintain inertia, does this apply to our ultra low speed rpms?
nodding now, let my mind ponder …

To show I am not all talk I made a vid of me on the UW28:
In the top one I came running back to stop the vid on my phone, for which I now have enough energy. Ive ridden the length of the parking lot several times. The hard part is the camber as it is on a hill.
Something else that annoys me is that I use the wheel touching my right leg for balance. It is extremely difficult to rotate and have the wheel exactly in the middle. In no time I start to wobble and need to hop off.
On Tuesday I will get the 24” which is too small to give balance like that so hopefully it will give me the chance to learn the right way
This is great and all, but are there any uw distance riders?
I think 1 km would be a goal by itself. Isnt there a guiness record of someone riding as far as possible. You’re welcome to give it a go SirCranky
@Setonix you seem to ride forever. Indeed the hard part of a heavy wheel is to carry it back. As the 36UW should be comparingly easy for long distance, I rode maybe 80m-100m, on the 36 UW some times yesterday. I had to stop and rest for a while because of lack of energy. Right now I can not imagine to ride 10 times this distance or 1km. I don’t think that my riding style can be improved that much to get 10 times more energy. But you will definitely crack some smaller distance records with it.
The question would be if it makes sence to use a large UW for daily small distance commuting, i.e. in the 100m range from and to the car. It definitely is an option.
The reason I carry mine back was that I was rollong downhill and didnt want to ride uphill. I did two freemounts yesterday that worked right away. A 36” wheel should be big enough to just roll back without bending over too much maybe. Then it doesnt carrying. Also I think your wheel is better suited for offroad coz the tire is wider.
I wanna see you ride the 28” on Friday.
Ouch, life is hard. But wait, we ride unicycles because it is hard and not easy.
terry unigeezer has a video doing 1 mile on an ultimate wheel. his has the lunicycle-style leg braces - i think mainly to prevent rubbing but it seems like it might make it a bit more efficient too. https://youtube.com/shorts/FrSjDJcUOy4?si=l4B69PP-LCrw6slf
my personal record is about 1/3 mile going around my block, including a bit of up and down hill
That is well done. I should be able to reach that too when I keep at it. What wheel size did you do that on. I reckon the bigger the wheel the greater the distance
1 mile … I am glad to be german, they only have to go for 1km Did you notice that the right side of Terry’s wheel is blue and the left side is red? I thought about the same to ensure the correct pedal rotation so that they don’t become loose.
Terry doesn’t ride the TA tire. His has chainsaw-like teeth. With the TA jeans and long underwear should be enough.
