There is definitely a science.
You need to know which waters to troll, where the fish are that bite and definitely need a good lure/bait.
yes i believe that you need to target a certain species of fish when trolling.
For example: if you target a large fish then maybe a large lure correct? and vice versa for the smaller fish?

Trolling the shallows usually works the best. Lots of little fish, careful of the big fish, sometimes they can swallow your bait and break your line.
If you find a good spot you can usually do multiple passes.
why am I giving trolling advice? I am more into cast and retrieve.
