Hi everyone. I’m starting to really get into trials riding and my current seat
is just killing my fingers. It’s a Cionlli (Taiwanese), similar to a Viscount.
I’ve never tried one in person, but from watching Adam and Dan’s video it would
appear that the Miyata seat is the way to go. Would I be silly to even consider
anything else for trials?
If I do get a Miyata saddle, will it fit onto my Semcycle Deluxe seatpost
without any modifications?

The Miyata handle is a lovely addition and is a big plus. I say if your fingers
are suffering go for it.

Unfortunately no. The Miyata saddle has quite a different shaped plate on
the end of the seat post. You’ll need to get a Miyata seat post as well or
get a machinist to make up a plate for you that can then be welded to a
length of tube.
To give you an idea of the shape if you look at the plate that is connected to
the seatpost from above it looks something like this:

Very true. Bumpers are currently hard to get, although I think unicycle.com may
sell them in future. After quite a bit of searching I ordered a few replacements
from Georg Siegmon in Germany, but I think that he sent me his last ones.

The Miyata style seats are my favorite. The handle is great, the seat has a
comfortable shape and it is easy to convert to an air seat.
The Miyata seats have a problem with seat collapse when used for muni and
trials. Inside the seat is a metal stiffener plate. The plate is thin and wimpy.
It will eventually crack and bend and the seat will collapse. The stiffener
plate needs to be stronger to take the abuse of muni and trials and my fat butt.
After suffering a seat collapse in the middle of a muni ride I have modified my
new seat by putting a thick layer of epoxy on the plate to stiffen it up and
give it extra strength. I don’t know how long the epoxy plate sandwich will hold
up, but it seems to be working OK. Another more expensive option would be to get
a stronger plate custom made.
The wimpy seat base can be fixed by getting a carbon fiber base. UnicycleSource.com sells the carbon fiber base. If you get the the carbon fiber
base you will probably also want the Roach seat cover since the carbon fiber
base does not have the little clips under it to hold on the old green Miyata
seat cover. A bonus with the new base is that you’ll be able to reuse your
existing Semcycle Deluxe seatpost because you can drill the holes in the base to
fit any seatpost.

If you can get your hands on just a Miyata handel you can attach it to a
Viscount (and presumably a Viscount-type) seat.
Remove the plastic bumper. Peel back the cover and foam (it is glued down with
contact cement). Cut off the metal tabs the old bumper was screwed into. Drill 3
holes in the metal seat plate that match the holes in the Miyata handel. Insert
bolts. Glue foam and cover back in place. Attach Miyata handel.
I did this with the Viscount on my Coker, it was quite easy and works very
well. Where to get a Miyata seat handel is another problem. Ask Unicycle
Source. It would be a good idea to offer replacement parts. They do break from
time to time.
