Travel bag

It is a shame that no one makes a travel bag for unicycles especially for a 29er or larger. I see Qu ax makes one but nothing available in the USA.. I have been looking at double wheel bags and folding bike bags. I have looked through old posts and didn’t find any info I could use. Any other suggestions?

DIY. I sewed a unicycle bag for my 36er.
Made of parachute fabric, it’s lighter and more compact than the already (comparatively) light b!ke bag that I use for my unis that fit in it (up to 29", plus the 26er fatty). My bag is of course less durable than others made of thicker fabric, but I made purely made the bag to avoid any discussions with the personnel when taking the 36er in the train.

I’m better with a wrench than a needle and thread .

I’d like to see you sow a bag with a wrench instead of a needle. :face_with_tongue:

It appears that my travel bag post disappeared so I’m throwing this out to get it back on the topics list.

My girlfriend and I were using a bag for a large folding chair for a 29" and a 27.5" together, since that was cheaper than wheel bags. Worked pretty well and was quite robust, I thing just searching online stores for the approximate dimensions will help.

I paid $47 for a basic nylon zipper bike bag on amazon. Here’s the one I ordered. Looks like that particular one is out of stock now, but I think there are a lot of similar ones: Amazon.com: Aophire Folding Bike Bag 26 inch to 29 inch Thick Bicycle Travel Case,Bike Cases for Air Travel,Transport,Shipping : Sports & Outdoors. On my last trip I flew with it carrying a 29 muni and a 24. (I’d first tried packing it in a used bicycle hard-case I’d picked up on facebook marketplace, but that ended up putting me over the weight limit sporksmith :unicycle: :rust:: "Off to Detroit for #unicycle nationals! carefully…" - Hachyderm.io)

I use velcro straps to hold the contents together, and wrap the whole thing in a foam sleeping pad to give a little protection.

Forgot to mention - I’ve also used it to travel with one 26” unicycle. In that case there was a lot of extra material flopping around, which was a little annoying. A friend helped me install some grommets to help tie together the loose bag material.

So am I. But that didn‘t stop me

I was looking at the folding bike bags. Do you think a 32 would fit?

I made a bag for my 27.5 using a bike double 700 wheel bag. Added timber sheet as frame to hold bits and pool noodles for extra padding. Worked ok on recent trip to Japan, I bought a folding trolley to help moving around the airports.

I have something else for my 29 as well, but not used yet. It uses a small bike bag and holds to whole unicycle fully assembled. Sorry, no photos of that to hand.

Both are still over sized luggage but I paid nothing extra using ANA.

I really like this bag and I really like the way you mounted the frame and saddle. The wheel bags I have looked at on amazon say they will hold two 29 inch wheels, did you try fitting a 29er with tire mounted in the bag? I’m more concerned about taking on a train or bus than an air plane

A standard 29” tyre should work in the wheel bag but I’m using the Crux 3.25 which is had effective diameter of about 31”. It sort of fits but was stretching the zippers. Reducing tyre pressure may help but reduces protection. Also, only the frame would then fit in the bag leaving saddle and tbar out.

I carried the 27.5 in trains ok, can’t speak for buses.

Thank you bruce.

I see I totally misunderstood the thread. I thought with a travel bag , you meant one that is attached to the unicycle with space for a sleeping bag and tooth brush to go camping or something.
What is the weight of such a wheel-bag with unicycle in it @BruceC . I’ve been thinking about bringing a decent unicycle to Thailand when staying at my in-laws. The unicycle I bought there is too small and none of my seat posts fit on it.

My 27.5 complete in bag and with extra padding was 14 kg. Not so heavy but awkward to carry by its handles. That’s why I bought a folding luggage trolley to move around airports and to and from hotels. Attached wheels would be ideal.

yeah that is kinda heavy to drag around, reminds me of the time I had bought a 15kg dumbell in the shop, back when I was student, which I had to take to the train to get back home. That quickly got very heavy to walk with.

Carrying a unicycle with you while traveling surely is not convenient even when heading out on vacation by car making room for my unicycle with all of our other luggage is a challenge.

The reason for my travel bag post is that I would like to do a short multi day ride ( originally planned as a bike trip) that would workout best if I took a bus rather than drive. This way I can do my ride one way and get transportation home from my destination instead of riding back several days to get my car at my starting point. Originally I planned to do this by taking my car and doing the trip on my bicycle, out and back, this brings up the first stumbling block that I encountered in my planning, storing my car at my starting point for 4 days while I ride. So I started looking at train travel which opened up a whole new set of logistic issues mainly what would be a 4 hour car trip becomes a 11 hour train trip spread out over 2 days and the same coming home. The bus seems to be the best option as a 7 hr ride but transporting my bike becomes the challenge here leading to me thinking about my unicycle. Ideally I would like to do my 32 but my 29er would do.

After that long story you can see the lead up to why I am looking at a travel bag. Another issue on my mind is packing the travel bag with my clothes during my ride in my back pack and truly the biggest question is whether I have it in me to ride 35 miles a day with a fully packed back pack. I am fully prepared for fully packed multi day bike packing with my bike kitted out for such a ride including provisions for clothes, snacks, plenty of water and tools and materials for flats and repairs. Being prepared to that level on my unicycle I definitely am not.

Note: I don’t camp so I do not carry any camping equipment and only minimal food.

That sounds like quite an undertaking. Good luck and have fun. For me uni trips of 1-2 hours on a day are good enough. When taking the family on holiday abroad, there never is space for even the trials uni. women and girls have soooo much luggage.

To be quite honest and realistic I think such a trip on my unicycle will more than likely not happen. These trips I do on my bike tradionaly and more than likely I will figure a way to use my bike or change my destination. A 20 mile ride is a big ride ride for me on my unicycle and leaves me feeling it for a few days. Like you I’m a 5 to 10 mile rider for the most part I find these rides the most enjoyable. I am glad to have learned more about travel bags and I am going to do some experimenting with a few of the bags on amazon as they are relatively in expensive.
