Topeak Pakgo EX+ - Perfect 29er All In One Case

Sharing the process of packing - two unicycles for Unicon into this one case. It certainly can take the fully assembled G29er - but I plan to get a 24” in as well.

I think for that I’ll disassemble wheels from frames and strap down more tightly - main focus will be to pad out the cranks and hub.

I had to hold my breath at the cost of just a case like this (!) - don’t go and google it :see_no_evil_monkey:

But I suspect this will encourage my flying with a unicycle more readily.

I did not Google it. I typed it into Amazon. I thought I was prepared, given your warning. I was not prepared. Must listen even closer to @mindbalance in the future. :joy:

Happily there’s fairly substantial discounts which brings it all down.

Now I feel regretful for sharing the item as it again drifts into that land of purchases reflecting on one’s character.

It’s defo the perfect solution for the use-case (ha!) - and sure a free box from a bike shop would suffice but taking a Schlumpf wheel abroad already feels like a precious cargo, so I decided this was worth it for the longer haul.

Curious to see how accommodating Czech and Austrian trains will be with such a large item. But it should make the process genuinely a lot easier.

Just have to go on lots of trips now to make it feel worth it.

:face_with_peeking_eye: agree, despite other warnings from responders on this site, was not prepared. Almost spilled coffee. Frankly would rather buy new KH29 and carry it with no case instead!

But, being able to fly/train to uni with friends … certainly that is worth a lot too.

I checked and OBB (Austria) does allow bikes but has limited spaces for them and you need tickets for regional trains. it’s probably going to be easier to keep in box as the equivalent of a suitcase while travelling.

I disagree about the idea that it might make suggestions about your character. The cost has to be considered from a long term perspective. It’s not cheap but is within the standard costs for a hard bike case and an investment in keeping unis safe for multiple trips. There’s a lot going on in the European scene and it makes life easier if/when you want to go to events and don’t have to go round bike shops for a box, spend time chopping it down then worry that it’s not going to survive to destination in one piece…

Oh yeah - defo keeping in the case - less explaining. I think they may have a max dimensions but I suspect it will be fine.

Phew. Appreciate the reassurance here - and yes longer time it hope it’ll pay dividends due to the fact I know I can easily to to X place with gear and ride! :folded_hands::flexed_biceps:

I googled the price. I guessed very close to the highest they seem to go for. A nice box like that seems completely warranted though when you have such a nice geared uni. I considered getting a used bike case when I went to Unicon 21 but ultimately just made cardboard boxes so I could check them as standard baggage without paying oversized fees. If I fly again I might try to make something a little fancier. I hope your travels go well with this case.

Considering the cargo, I see the expense as reasonable. Can the uni be replaced? Yes, but at even more considerable expense. My son bought a bike case to move to Germany, and it cost $300 used on Facebook Marketplace. New, the case was over $1000. It protected the bike on the way there and on the way home. The case paid for itself in that regard. I would view your case the same way. £300 in protection in each leg, and your unis make it home undamaged. Expensive, but justifiable.

Eh, I don’t think you need to justify your purchase or your character to anyone here in interweb-land; you earned the money and you can spend it how you will – and you are protecting something that is important to you and costs a whole lot more. It seems like a wise investment to be honest

@DrD very true.

@mindbalance If you like traveling with your uni, and that fits your needs, enjoy it. I’ll bet your uni will always arrive unscathed and ready to roll. Not to mention, a “new” uni is not my uni … mine is a cheap Sun, but it and me have been through a lot of bumps together.

Also, if you consider the cost of custom shipping cases in the same category as your Topeak case (such as from here). You’ll find the cost comparable.
