To build a better muni

I’m getting sick of breaking a unicycle everytime I go to do some Muni. I’ve
bent frames, I’ve sheared axles, my cranks don’t stay straight for more than 5
minutes, the seat gets bent, the inner tube pops, all in all my collection of
unicycles are not too happy.

Currently I’m talking with a framebuilder about building a custom muni as I
figure it will be cheaper than importing one (postage to NZ is horrendous).

One of thhe big issues is getting hold of a decent hub and cranks as these are
the bits I tend to bend/break. Can anyone comment on the quality of the Suzue
hub? Will it stand up to 1 metre drops? Are there some decent cranks out there
that won’t cost the earth?

Also any tips on where to get parts and what makes a good muni would be most
appreciated. I know there are a few good sites out there so if anyone can point
me in the right direction?

Sooner or later I’ll be able to afford a DM ATU but till then I’d like to be
able to play around for more than 5 minutes of semi - hardcore (picnic tables
and the like - no 8ft drops yet:-).

Also I spose I should invest in a bit of protective gear one of these days.

Cheers Peter, The proud owner of 5 sets of bent cranks.

Re: To build a better muni

I hear you about breaking stuff- definately it is very frustrating!

My advice is to either buy a DM ATU (or Vector) if you want to do very big drops
(or the Telford for x-country and moderate trials), or be patient for another
couple of months, when a new high-end MUni will come out. By the time you’ve
made a custom unit complete with custom hub, you’ll have spent more than if you
just ordered one (I estimate that my custom MUni is worth almost U.S.$3000
including all the failed hub design attempts!)

The Suzue hub has stood up to some wicked punishment by Dan Heaton and Adam
Ryznar over the last while, but really it’s not designed for the kind of abuse
that trials/MUni puts on a a unicycle.

Cheers,

Kris.

Peter,

Have a look on the US unicycle source (John Drummonds site),
www.unicyclesource.com he has a new hub that could replace standard one but
“bomb proof!”. I have been drooling myself.

Suzue hubs are pretty tough. They appear to be forged, which explains their
strength. They are a bargain at $20 at Unicycle Source. My son Daniel and I are
buying Shimano bike cranks (left side only) and drilling and tapping them for
9/16" pedals at 140 mm length. Cut off the excess and you have a very tough
crank at about $12 US a pair (not counting $40 for the Park Tool taps). The
cranks are labeled FC-C102-TY30. The Black Widow cranks are also good, but $89,
and the shortest is 152 mm.

Learned the hard way to screw in the Park crank puller as far as possible before
tightening: lost half the fine aluminum threads, and only got the crank off by
removing the floating tip on the puller screw (it unscrews if you pull out).

We have found that the 24" United pillow block frame ($34 at Unicycle Source) is
excellent when teamed with the 20" Monty wheel and 2.5" tire. Haven’t been able
to break one yet. And Daniel does 5 foot drops. BTW, do not forget the air seat:
Miyata or Semcycle with a small inner tube inserted. Drill a hole in the base
and pass the tube stem through.

Blessings!
