Thread tagging thread (have you used tags?)

Since Gilby’s instituted thread tagging, we’ve seen many interesting phenomena appear in a little box labelled “Tags” at the bottom of each thread.

On a few occasions, I’ve seen people tag threads with words that might indicate the subject of the thread. I think this is the intended purpose: to summarize the thread in a word or two, so people can quickly search the fora for a subject of interest. Quite easy, that, as the tags themselves are “clickable”, leading you to instant results!

Tagging also gives one a way to look at the fora from a much higher level, to see what people are talking about here. Tags that show up in many places are bound to show up in the “tag cloud”, with increasing font size as the tag becomes more and more popular. (Are we really that obsessed with German sausages?)

Being that not all threads have been tagged with much more than the words in the title, I haven’t found thread tags as useful as I’d like. I’ve been able to achieve good results with the “Advanced Search” utility, so I haven’t seen much need to use another tool such as tag searching.

On other occasions, however, I’ve noticed people have been editorializing threads by putting their views in tags. As tags are limited to 25 characters, it’s quite tough to fully state one’s opinion. This channel is even more limited than a Facebook status or a Twitter update, which are criticized for their brevity. After all, if you’ve got something to say, you should be able to speak your mind without worrying about running out of words, no?

Another limitation of putting editorials into tags is that of anonymity. As it stands, we have no idea where tags come from! If we don’t know who you are, we can’t take you seriously. That is, if you aren’t going to stand behind your words, if you aren’t going to give them any personal value, why should we?

I thought I’d start this thread to open a discussion on tagging: have you used tags? How did it work for you? Have you wrote any tags? What made you decide to write the tags you did?

Also, if you’ve put any editorials into a thread anonymously, now’s your chance to stand up for your opinion. Do you really think Harper is against polls? Do you really believe Intotheblue is stupid? Do you really think Maestro8 should be banned? Tell us here! Tell us why! Tell us who you are!

…or if you wish to remain anonymous, fine, don’t tell us anything. Just know that your tags aren’t much more than graffiti. Hopefully Gilby will give us a little paint remover one of these days so we can clean up these ugly tags.

Ack, I forgot to mention something about wurst!

As the wurst tag has aptly demonstrated, the tagging feature has a huge vulnerability. As useful as tagging could be, it can easily be made useless by “tag spamming”: adding a particular tag to threads that have nothing to do with that tag.

There are two effects of tag spamming: 1) the tag appears to be much more popular than it should be and 2) the tag is no longer useful for its intended purpose. Many Internet search engines have the capability to identify the cases when tags are over-used to combat effect 1), but there seems to be no way to mitigate effect 2). When you discount a tag, you’re making it even less useful.

The only reason I bring this up is to offer the victims of tag slander a bit of recourse. While spamming is usually a bad thing,* here it can be used for good. Where one uses a tag for editorial comment, possibly associating the tag with threads that demonstrate the basis for their opinion, spamming that tag diminishes the value of its associativity. With sufficient spam, the tag appears to make less sense than what one can derive from the <25 characters therein.

  • Canned Spam, however, is a good thing.

I used tags on MR once. Something about chatroom and another general description of the thread, which was surrounded by other tags of immaturity and funny.

Now, they arent there. i dont remember removing them, so im not sure how that happened.

I love the tags on this thread.
Especially the second one.

I’m gonna go out on a limb here and say most of those tags were put in place by Banana Kitten.

Being that each user can only create two tags per thread, I must have a lot of groupies.

That, or someone’s gone through a lot of trouble to show his love for my work.

I must be doing something right

Omglolzorz

The tagging of largely unstructured data in a highly unstructured environment where any sense of order, common purpose, and cooperation are absent, is, for the most part, a waste of time.

I haven’t read nearly enough about folksonomies as I should, but I strongly suspect that they work in environments where the participants place a higher value on the content than they do on recognition for their contributions or success at one-up-manship.

I defy anyone to identify any individual who has posted in JC for whom that is the case.

I defy anyone to identify enough individuals who post in RSU for whom that is the case and who constitute a significant enough number to make any attempt at tagging have even a remote chance of succeeding.

u fergot about ME!

I am rolling on the floor whilst laughing my ass off.

People think I’m stupid?

Wurst?

Wurst!
