The world's second best unicycle seat (for tightwads)

My seat also arrived today, looking quite awesome. I’m very eager to try it out. Thanks again, Ben. Do you have a preference for any particular brand of dark milk chocolate?

I got mine today, too. Looks great! Many thanks, Ben!
I took your advice and ordered a KH adjustable seatpost from UDC the beginning of the week, but it looks like it won’t be delivered until after the weekend. So I’ll probably wait until then to install it. Unless I just can’t stand the waiting, which is likely!

Thanks again, I’m pretty sure I would never have tried this on my own.

Why wait when you can ride it now!

Whatever you like

Post some pics once you all get the seats mounted.

Is anyone running a touring bar? In order to use the stiffener plate you need to extend the holes at the seat and cut off some so that it fits the “shortened distance” between the grab handle holes and the seat base holes. Also, you have to flatten the bend in the plate, which is easy to do with a hammer and a blockof wood. I’ll post a pic of mine when I get a chance.

For my flattened freeride+touring bar i simply turned the plate around (upside down) drilled new holes into the plate, i think about 8mm more to the inside,( away from the post) and also shortened the plate by the same amount (at the post end).
Here’s a pic before drilling the new holes:

and here the finished seat:

Thanks, Ben, for saving me from the horrible accident that would have happened if I tried to flatten a seat myself! Mine came in the mail yesterday and I gave it a brief try after my regular practice. I’m planning to get a longer muni-ish ride today and a much longer road ride over the long weekend. It works great on the Shadow handle base. My seat was tilted up a couple notches but I changed it to one notch to even out the weight a little.

They look great!

Welcome to the world of comfy uni seats

Seriously, I couldn’t ride a curved seat after freeing the jewels, they would revolt!

I did build one for myself and my new Oracle 29, pics to follow …

So, next up: Nurse Ben grab handle mounts!

When I get back from vacation and my wife gets a few paychecks in the bank, I’ll be buying a Tig Welder, THEN I can start building some mounts; it’s just too expensive to pay someone else to make them.

I’m thinking of making them from stainless or chromoly with powder coating, al is just too soft.

Nurse Ben’s Grab Handles

I’m excited!

NB when you do the grab handles let me know as i would be up for at least a couple

Got the seat in yesterday’s post.

Thanks Ben!

Now, which uni to put it on…

I’d love to get a Mk II version of the grab handle; my Mk I version is getting pretty worn from the fretting action of “just riding along.” Here’s a pic, though the “waist” where it’s worn isn’t so clear as in real life.

And to stay on topic with the thread - a pic of the seat I flattened - not quite so extreme as the true flat seats; I’m pretty happy with it.

Ben, go take a look at my pictures again. I did just what you have suggested.

Yes, the seats are not 100% flat, more like 90%, but it’s about the most you can get without doing some foam trimming.

I have tried a 100% flat in my “early days”, even tried a negative curve, and it really wasn’t any better AND I felt like having a little curve was better for keeping centered on the seat.

Like Wes (Knoxuni) found, a flattened seat will slide under you if you don’t hold on when climbing and your butt gets a little out of the seat.

As to the NB grab handles, I have found that over time the aluminum will gouge and flatten, I even broke one off recently (it was my top mount experimental mount), so I did a couple new mounts yesterday using T6 tubing that’s a bit thicker and harder than the material I used for the original mounts.

I think stainless or chomoloy is a better bet, I just need to get a welder and start doing them myself as paying for welding is $$$

this is the current base im rididing and i do think like a little kick up in the front would be such a good idea!! One of the thinks i dont like is the way the cover fits

What do you have wrapped around your brake lever? Just curious…

Its a spooner type device made of epoxy wrapped in orange duck tape

Got it. Rode it. Love it.

Can’t think you enough Ben! I took a picture of it on my KH29 leaning against a Disc Golf target in my back yard. As you can see, I have the KH adjustable seatpost adjusted a little more than slightly nose up for fear of sliding off the front. Now that I’ve ridden it a bit those fears are unwarranted. I’m considering adjusting the nose down a bit for my next ride.

Then I took it for a proper MUni ride at the newly opened Coppiced Woods trail. That asphalt you see in the background is the Louisville Loop custom made for a geared 36er. The second picture is about 1 mile into the 2 mile trail.

Handles great and far more comfortable than the stock (curved) Fusion Freeride saddle it replaced. What a game changer! I’m sure Kris and UDC will eventually mass produce a line of flat saddles but I’m glad I’m in on the ground floor!

I’ve been working alot, but I did get a chance to grind the hole slots on the seat post and attach it to the uni. I placed a couple of washers under the front bolt holes of the seat to give it a little lift as well. I did not get in a long enough ride to comment on the seat yet, but I don’t think I will need the KH seat post. I’m looking foward to a long ride on a nice day.

I never uploaded a photo in this program before. I didn’t see the photo before the post so I tried a few times. I apologize in advance if the post shows multiple photos of the same picture.

If you’re running a Nurse Ben grab handle, you may find that it’s new position is rather low. If that’s the case then check out the Tranz X bar ends. I’ve been using them for a while, they are “rotationally” adjustable and the ends can be oriented up or down just by flipping the mount end of the bar end:

Here’s a link to the type of bar ends I use, they are generic made in Taiwan, lots of vendors on Ebay, pick your color:

They are quite durable except for the clamping bolt which is prone to shearing, so. use leftover “black” seat/grab handle bolts on mine.

Looks like todays the day. Have developed a bad cough and don’t feel like doing a whole lot, so I guess I’ll take a crack at flattening the seat on my Muni. My last seat was a practice one, and this one will be for realsies.

Flattened the seat on my Muni and my 36er today. Time will tell how I like them. First impressions are that I notice the smaller ‘contact points’ with the groin area. You can feel your weight more focused on smaller areas than on your entire groin. Both of my seats are slightly angled up…

I think I’ll be able to appreciate this more on my 36er as that’s where I’ve noticed the most saddle pain in comparison to my Muni, but it sounds like I won’t be disappointed with either.
