The saddle was comfortable. But I was using more energy to keep the balance. After a while I was cycling on one and one side of the saddle. It was difficoult to sit right on the saddle. I was testing it on tarmac ungeared with 110 mm cranks. I found out that it was better to have some shafting on the thighs rather than suffer from control.
Too flat maybe, I would have to try it out first, easy to build a stronger one.
Were you using bike saddles on the Uni?
Unless you had an excellent handle like the KH plastic handles in the same position, it would be hard to make a direct comparison. Having said that, I think the front section of bike seats are marginally too narrow for unicycling.
In terms of the Fizik Aliante- it is still much thinner and narrower at the back than a regular Unicycle saddle. It’s similar to what I use on my road bike.
It will be strong and stiff enough for pulling on the handle but may not be for ground impacts, would need to strengthen up the front half at least.
I’m never riding a curved seat again!
This is something every unicyclist should do (esp if you are male).
Take all your clothes off, and sit on a curved saddle.
I spent a couple of hours this morning doing just that, riding around my apartment and trying various sitting and riding positions.
I won’t post photos of my ‘squishy bits’, but if you look at my diagrams, and imagine where your genitals sit, then did the experiment yourself, you’ll find your squishy bits really do get squished.
In my general riding position, my scrotal sac sits directly on the 45 degree bend, and bulges upwards in a rather unsatisfactory way. Suffice to say, on the NNC Flatfish saddle, there was much less squish compared to the curved saddle.
Try it, get back to me…I’m interested to hear if the anatomical effect is similar among different unicyclists. (females too- if you care to contribute)
No. The Fizik Aliante and all the others wide bicycle saddles has nearly the same width in the back of the saddle as the Unicycle saddles.
I was looking after what bicyclists use in cobblestone cycle races. As “Paris - Roubaix”. That kind of cycling is nearly the same as what kind of Unicycling I usually do on my 36" here in Norway. And after checking it out, I found out that nearly all the best riders was on a “Belgian sofa”. That means a curved bicycle saddle.
(I have also tried the Hobson Pro-Hub X2 Saddle on the Unicycle. I think I used it for about 10 meters).

The last two years I have riden with a group in the annual Solstice Cyclists Parade, a precurser to the Fremont Solstice Parade (scroll down to 2011 for a picture). Ninety-nine percent of the riders are nude except for body paint. My freestyle uni has a Miyata seat and it is by far the most comfortable out of the group and is relatively flat.
BTW: covering your seat with a light cotton cloth will keep your thighs from sticking to the vinyl!
Just got back from a ride on the 36er, went out specifically to see what the seat was like for climbing and descending, it was really good, no loss of control at all, very happy.
I rode down a 4WD track that was quite rough and again I did not notice any difference in control, just more comfort.
I now think a MUNI version is viable, I am going to build one this weekend and give a Flatfish MUNI NNC a go, I’ll let you know what it is like.
Not sure on cost, probably around $140.00 NZD. I will have to add up material costs once I have settled on a build.
I’ve been following the thread with a lot of interest
But I am wondering how much a seat called “No Nut Crush” might be the best seat for me since I’m not really trying to resolve a nut crush problem…
I need to do more experiment with seats
It could also stand for No Numb…uh..think of something starting with C that can be posted ![]()
Just got back from a 50km ride on a standard unicycle (125mm/24"/100PSI), with an avg speed of 18km/hr and no dismounts.
I know if I had been riding a curved saddle, all my perineal structures would be pretty numb, and I’d have stopped several times on the side of the road to let the blood recirculate.
As it was, I completed the entire ride with no dismounts, continued revving it up (do the math) at low resistance, and only my ischium was aching (which is what you should expect, because that is what you should be sitting on).
I love the NNC Flatfish saddle! ![]()
Finished the first Flatfish MUni NNC, 15 layers of 200 gram carbon with 5 doublers around the post mount, feels very stiff.
I have drilled and taped mounting points directly into the carbon and glued washer plates and nuts in behind (not shown in pics) so mounting will be with cap screws like a Freeride saddle.
Weight was 195 grams before I started adding glue etc.
He Pete NNC,
the saddle you made looks so cool, imho, and the last pics look promising too.

Dam! That looks sooo nice ![]()
So when and how much? ![]()
Cheers.
I haven’t worked out the cost properly yet, I suspect it would be in the $150-$170 NZD range, when = late November or early December at this stage.
Sorry I can’t be more accurate ![]()
Cheers.
£90 ish then
sounds good to me
can’t put a price on seat comfort.
Put me down for one
I want one of this flat for road rides… Will be here some internationl shippments? ![]()
Will do, cheers:D.
