I heard it was the same knob pattern and construction as the Onza Sticky finger (minus the soft middle).
that looks exactly like a luna… except that its white and has nimbus blizzard on it. The lettering of “Bike Trial” looks just like the luna to
Nimbus Blizzard
+1
The UDC picture even says bike trial on the tire. The Blizzard apparently weighs less still.
I got mine recently as well. I’ve ridden the Creepy Crawler and the Luna before and have a friend that has the Monty.
I replaced the worn out Creepy Crawler with the Blizzard. The walls felt thicker and I knew I would have troubles putting it on my KH rim. Thankfully I warmed up the tyre and it wasn’t as much of an issue.
The ride is very smooth as you said. I did measure the weight of the tyre. And it was a fair bit heavier than the Creepy Crawler. However the Creepy crawler had a bit of wear. The Compound of the Blizzard is harder than that of the CC. so I tend to think the CC would be a bit more grippy.
I’ve only ridden it a little but at this stage I think its more suited to street and flatland riding than trials.
I love the Blizzard for trials because of the thick side walls, I tried riding a CC not to long ago at my old PSI and it just failed so much… so now I love the Blizzard and dislike the CC
Just recieved my MEC today, have only used it on skinnys so far but one major plus, I didn’t need to use levers to get it on, I’ve always had to use levers to get my CC on/off and it’s a massive pain, no longer a problem!
I found the tyre much easier for riding skinnys, not really sure why, i’ll come back here when i’ve tried it with sidehops
let’s hope its better for pinch flats too
You used levers to put your CC on?! I put my friend’s CC on with levers, I just switched tire back to my good old Luna and didn’t used lever to put it on. I’m gonna go for a little ride and recompare my Luna with my Monty old school.
Nimbus Blizzard-… Really? It’s identical to the Echo tyre (not the Luna tyre) and from biketrials they are pretty average-low end mod tyres. VERY poor grip on anything damp or off-camber (like rocks) compared to the sticky tyres like CC, MEC, Try-All. It’s an absoltely foul tyre to say the least and not just because of the colour. I had an Echo tyre on my bike for a while a few years back and disliked its lack of grip and cooperativeness. That being said, it is considered good for bounce… but a Try-All or MEC still totally shits in the Echo/Blizzard tyre’s mouth in that department.
See some more Echo tyre reviews for some more accurate reviews on how the Nimbus Blizzard might perform.
Maxxis CC- I always found it was SUPER easy to get on and off the rim… even a DX32. The Echo tyre and Try-All tyres I had were total bitches to take off and fit on in comparison. I’ll happily say the Maxxis CC is a great entry-level / mid-card tyre for the average trials rider. But its sidewalls are sucky and will fail you on off-camber obstacles (i.e. slippery slopy gnarly angled rocks). The grip however is awesome.
MEC, CC, and Try-All (Stiky and Stiky Lite) all carry the 42a compound which is far superior to the generic tyre compound they use on Echo/Blizzard tyres for trials. Street riders should enjoy the harder Echo/Blizz tyres more though!
If you can buy it, get a Try-All Stiky Lite!
Sponge, check your emails!
PS. How would you compare MEC against the Stiky Lite? Im absolutley loving my MEC at the moment but having a few folding issues.
I just came back from a little ride. What I noticed is it’s really crappy bounce, his tire has really no bounce! For it’s grip, I haven’t really done anything to compare yet, but it’s pretty worned out so I wont really be able to tell a big difference between 2 worned out tires. For now, it’s sucks, but I like it:p
I’m going back riding for a little bit!
I have to disagree with you there, I’ve found it great on rocks that are wet and that’s also after riding over wet grass for about 50m. I think it all depends on how much you (the rider) weighs and what air pressure you run…
personal I’m 70kg and run the Blizzard at about 15-20PSI and its perfect for me, I use to run about 25-27PSI in a CC and now that’s not enough because I love the side walls on the Blizzard now
I’ve found that pretty much every tire run at a low PSI is grippy, my friend’s Try-all who runs at like 15/20 PSI maybe was super grippy on rocks, I used to ride mine at like 30 PSI and didn’t found it as grippy, same with the CC I tried, it gripped really bad on mine, but it was good on my friends uni. That might just be me though.
Any tyre on low pressure will have more grip. I bet if someone ran a Try-All on such a low pressure they’d have even more grip.
That being said, if one enjoys riding a tyre like the Nimbus or Echo, it’s up to them ultimately!
But looking at tyres scientifically, there is a very good and obvious reason why NO world-class competition rider in biketrials ever uses a tyre like Echo/Nimbus and only use MEC, Maxxis, or Try-All for wet rocks.
I’ve ridden the Maxxis, Try-All, and Echo for a very long time on both bikes and unis. The Maxxis and Try-All grip is virtually the same as they are both 42a super tacky compound, but the Echo/Nimbus is not trustworthy for wet angled surfaces or angled take-offs. If someone gave you a Stiky Lite, I’m pretty sure you’d never want an Echo/Nimbus for trials again.
That being said, who here actually is lucky enough to ride a Stiky Lite? That is one tyre I’ve never had any personal experience with
Sponge, what the hell were you doing up at 5AM?
on topic, I know that brendan le foll and simon berry both ride the stiky lite!
Well… if you’re running that low it’ll grip.
I ran the echo tyre aout a year ago. I can’t say about the blizzard - but it was a pile of crap. I really liked the bounce and then I took it out in the wet… wow was that painfull. Took it straight off and sold it half price to a trials biker in near perfect state.
After having ridden the Tryall lite for a while now, I’ll say it doesn’t have quite as much grip as a CC/MEC. I’ve slipped doing big gaps on slightly polished rocks where I’m sure my old MEC wouldn’t have slipped. However it does bounce better than the CC/MEC. It doesn’t keep it’s shape nearly as nicely as the MEC so it needs higher pressure for drops/gaps.
Overally I really like it, but I think it’s still overpriced. I’ll probably buy an MEC when I next buy one. Although I don’t think i’ve ever bought the same tyre twice in a row…I’ve gone MEC/Tryal white/MEC/Tryall light. To be honest the MEC is the only tyre i’ve bought twice… incidentally I only got the white tryall because they said at unicon you wouldnt be able to ride indoors without a non marking tyre and trials tyres would be banned. Turned out no one cared, but the white tyre did look cool!
I only run it at that pressure because the side walls are as thick as my phone.
Ok guys I’ve got some spare cash and I want to get some spare parts -mainly a tire - just so I can have one just in case mine goes offline. I’ve been reading threads/searching google for almost an hour now and I still can’t decide what to get…
I live in Canada and I currently have a very well used CC which is the only tyre I’ve used, so I don’t have any opinions on anything. I ride trials, and I’m in BC so wet conditions are not unlikely. My budget is about $100 CAD, but I also want to get a spare seatpost, tire tube, etc.
Suggestions please. I would love to turn off my brain and just bow down to the communal wisdom of everyone here.
Get just a basic cromo seat post. they’re cheap, expendable and solid as for a tire, a try all is really nice (try wherestheseat.com or cbtrials or renegade) and of course a Luna is always awesome (for wet conditions, just keep it at a lower psi). just get a standard 19" trials tube and yeah. and for super wet weather get some really grippy pedals too if you need em, like dx’s or something
Awesome thanks for the quick reply man! That’s mostly what I was thinking, but it’s wonderful that you said it all. I now have a plan
If you’re tight on cash don’t bother with the try-all it’s more expensive and really not better than the CC in my opinion. Get a cheap as chips CC (not a luna if you ride in the wet) and a crmo post. Then grab some nice Wellgo MG-1s because they’re quite cheap and very grippy. Or find some DMR V8 copies
