Announcement time is coming. For once, I’m going to do things properly and plan ahead a little.
The weather models are forecasting nice weather in Cherbourg this weekend… Which is perfect, because this weekend is also the Fête de la Musique summer solstice — in other words, the longest day of the year. Or the shortest night, depending on how you look at it.
And what better time to try and beat @Timo_Hirschmann 24-hour record from last year?
Anyway, all that to say: this weekend, I’ll be attempting to ride 527 km or more. There will be a YouTube live stream (link coming soon) and live timing available as well (link also coming soon).
I wish you the best of luck and perseverance. I’m very curious to see how you do.
If you really want the shortest possible night, you could also go to a place further north. There it would be bright for even longer
Night would be shorter, but it would cost a lot of money (travel, staying and everything), for not that big of an advantage, especially with the tiredness from the travel.
I’m very curious too. It is 114 km more than my best distance on 24 hours (with 7.5 hours of rest, and many sharp turns) and 172 more than on the last long race I did (with 6 hours of rest, many hills and luggage).
But, it is also doable in 20:20 at my 100 miles pace, so I guess it will be something in between 450 and 620 km, and hopefully closer to the second one.
And, even if I don’t succeed in beating you, it should at least be a french record (currently there is none, the best attempt is probably mine, but not official).
Funny, in Norway I believe the longest day doesn’t even see the night. @Aurelien I wish you all the best. I’m still sore in my legs from doing only 30km this weekend. On a 24, not a 36.
Where do you intend to ride? Surely outside of a stadium, you would be hindered by traffic.
It will be on a 400 m race track, less than a km away from my home. It will be closed for everyone except me, so I should not have problems with traffic or other users. It will be a lot of laps (hopefully more than 1318), but I won’t have to slow down at anytime.
After 8 hours of nausea preventing me from eating properly basically all night long, then loads of pain in basically every part of my body, I’m having huge Achilless tendon pain.
So I have decided to stop at 823 laps (323,8 km), in order to not injure myself.
It is really far from @Timo_Hirschmann WR, but it might be a french record (even though two french riders (including myself) did more during the “24 h de l’INSA” last year.
