Re: the hero of your novel
Ouch! I’m glad you’re wrong, that would really hurt! I can’t imagine any place in myself where I could comfortably accomodate several hundred pages of paper, unless I ate them one by one… nonetheless that would be a rather disgusting experiment.
Everyone is a hero. There are no villains, just unenlightened heroes - people who haven’t yet discovered their own capacity to become a hero. Names and occupations are unimportant. The greatest heroes simply spread love everywhere they go, and inspire unity and compassion. That’s all the story one needs!
Mine is called the “Thomas is Hard Core and Rocks the world” series. In it a kid whose life is mirroring mine, kicks bad guys buts and shows up skaters and bikers with his skills.
My hero is very mysterious, and his identity remains unknown, even to me. However, if you feel the need to get that novel out of yourself, you may wish to do it in November and check out this website: www.nanowrimo.org You have exactly one month to write your mini-novel. I believe the idea is that with a very defined deadline and with emphasis on completing the project as opposed to focusing on writing a brilliant masterpiece, one is more likely to actually write their story. I have never actually done this myself, but know several people who have, and they were glad they did.
Maybe if I start thinking about it now I’ll be able to answer your questions by November.

I did actually have a novel published in 1993 (or 1992, I forget)
It was called Flan.
In many ways, it was very autobiographical.

Interesting question
I suppose my novel would be explore human virtue through the contrasting and complimentary endeavors of art and science. I am a scientist and also ran a sculpture studio for 10 years or so.
The hero would be a juggler and a balancer (unicyclist) of sorts who can master these different realms and with his (or her) skills and accomplish something for the greater good with them .
Did you guys read the Ballad of the unicyclist poem on JJuggler’s webpage? He did a good job of portraying the unicyclists as a trickster-hero. Pretty cool.
The trickster hero is one of the oldest and most powerful heroes and he’s found in so many cultures. I studied mostly Graeco-Roman mythology, but he’s present in all sorts of Native American, African and druidic mythos, too. I think most unicyclists embrace the trickster hero in some capacity whether they know it or not!
The moral of the story would be that the greatest human triumph is accepting contrasting ideas and realities, balancing them, and doing so with elegance and zeal. Kind of Taoist, but that’s the idea.

Not that I can remember (I have not read it in a really long time). The follow-up has LOTS of unicycling in it, but alas, my publisher rejected it and so I’m still looking for a publisher for this second one. My third novel has even more unicycling in it than the second, but I’m not quite finished with it yet…

I really am going to have to read your book. Unless the movie is coming out sometime soon. Even with Evelyn Woods, I can’t read many novels in 90 minutes. Wonder if they could make this forum in a movie? I’ve read it so much I could have read several novels.
My book would be about a guy trapped in a funk from an uncertain future that was saved by the challenge of learning to unicycle. About a kid who rose above a traumatic childhood of an alchoholic mother to become an internet millionaire, husband, and father. His journey’s took him around the world, then back to the place he calls home. I’d tel more, but I don’t want to be a spoiler.

My story would be of an older man who had been lost in the whirlwind of computer technology and career pursuit. Then when finally exhausted and at wits end discovers the joy and the healing power of the wheel, a pleasure he had once taken for granted in his youth.
He rolls on happily ever after.
Hardly a novel, no super heroes, but I do like happy endings. Now turn off the light, Good night.
Great idea, but not necessarily fiction. That would be biographical for a few of us.
