New-to-me giraffe
Today I bought a 5’ giraffe on the local classifieds. The seller joked that he’d never ridden it “off-road” and was surprised to hear that my main ride was exactly that, an off-road unicycle.
It’s a an old Norco and very solid. I mounted using my 5’ fence and rode around the neighbourhood a few times. The seat is pretty dodgy and will need to be replaced but it will do while I get more comfortable on the tall uni.
Looks like I’ll be spending some more time learning to idle and ride backwards as these seem to be pretty important on a giraffe.
Free mounting the giraffe is also an challenge, I tried a few time as per some youtube vids but I think I’m fighting a mental block to throw myself up that high.
The funny thing I noticed was just how winded I was after these short rides, when I’m fine to ride all afternoon on my muni. I suppose it’s got something to do with working harder than necessary to keep my balance up there. I’m sure it will come with a little more practice.
Oh a “short” stop. Isn’t that what I described?
The difference between you and I is that I didn’t hold myself out to be the final answer. You apparently have the unicycle terminology book.
I think the case can be made that both could be considered ‘stalls’. Both interrupt forward progress for a short period before resuming riding. ‘Your’ stall would be a stall into a ‘hopping’ position and my stall would be a stall into an ‘idling’ position but both can also just be ridden out of.
Fair enough?
Learnt how to hop, just need to stop sliding off, my shoes don’t really have much grip left. And I can ride comfortably and turn corners for however long I like, I just need to work on my stamina - although I don’t see myself doing long distance on a 20" ![]()
I think of a stall as coming to a complete stop, and then riding on again. Maybe it involves rolling back slightly, maybe it doesn’t, I don’t think that’s an important detail.
Although, I always referred to stopping, immediately rolling back half a turn, and then riding on as a “rollback” - like a rollback mount but without the “mount” part. But maybe that’s just me. ![]()
My two [insert local small coinage here]: (I know you posted a year ago)
I learned hopping on a QU-AX Luxus, which is a decent learner uni for adults. Pretty soon after that, one of the cranks (square/cotterless) came slightly loose and started clicking. I just tightened it, and have had no issues since. Also, the wheel is still very true.
Today I learned unihopping on the 29er (riding-hopping-riding transition). I could already do it on the 20". The hopping itself was easy, the big wheel is not that much heavier. The hard part was stopping/stalling, I found that much harder to do in a controlled way than on the 20".
that would be the momentum of the wheel. just keep doing it, you will get used to it. i used to fall everytime i stalled on my coker, but now i can ride backwards a little bit and stall as much as i want
Congratulations on getting your giraffe! When I first was learning free mounting I found it helpful to wear basketball sneakers (vs. the normal flat-soled skate shoes I usually wear unicycling). This made the repeated landings from high up easier on my feet.
I found that just like with regular unicycling it because less physically demanding once your balance catches up. However, passing juggling clubs for even a few minutes on my giraffe is still a tough workout.
Thanks! Yeah, I make a point of wearing a good pair of running shoes with plenty of cushion left. I really need to replace that seat - my inner thighs are sore from the 20+ year old stamped steel seat.
first time trail
This week I bought nimbus 20" trial unicycle ;and yesterday went to try it on a trail. As I can hardly ride on street, and still learning free mounting,(don’t even know how to idle or hop); what was I doing off road:D…I enjoyed being inside the trail;all foliage colors and warm nice weather;and I tasted little bit what Muni might be all about. I had 24" uni till Today so passing to try the new 20 inch and wide nimbus tire was different; control was much better;UPDs while trying to free mount was much better as it was more close to the ground; the only thing is the seat post I ordered was to short so my knees weren’t in ideal position and I got tired while riding because of my knees position.I found out that I have to learn going downhill and I should choose more smooth and easy trails so that I can enjoy much more. The foliage leaves were great to ride on,but were hiding the stones-roots so had some UPDs. I really enjoyed being in nature;and had some quotes from mountain bikers and hikers as" wow,u rock, awesome",actually I wasn’t doing anything, just was trying to ride(my snail ride),free mount..And by the way, free mounting on trail road is different from my street’s pavement or asphalt..But,I had so much fun.And my wrist guards, shin guards and helmet really helped me alot!..
Nice video ![]()
and very good riding for such a small exp
but I have one thing to say: 20" is not a muni size ![]()
bigger wheel gets you through the offroads much faster and it gives much more fun
The video is great
The first time you ride large distances with a 20" by the end you´ll be exhausted. Like Vookash says is better a 24" for muni, but after a few rides with the 20" you´ll get used to.
Ride downhill is much funnier, XD.
P.D: Excuse me for my bad english.
You are right;I was pedaling pedaling but doesnt seem to be going anywhere!![]()
And I dont know how one can adjust going downhill and with all the bumps and rocks, roots…But I didnt even try riding downhill on regular street and just hit the off road trail;I have to practice ,I know..
Any tips for how to recover from root/rock bumps?(small bumps, do I have to hold the seat, etc?)
Yeah learning to hold the seat helps a lot but having a bigger wheel helps more. 24" seems to be king of Muni. If you’re mainly on trails though then you can whizz round a bit faster on a 26".
You are getting good fast but I suppose I was riding Muni 4-6 weeks in (on a 24" though).
Progress then slowed quite a lot from there ![]()
Thanks Mowcius; and when holding the seat should I sit on the seat or not, because when I was bumping it seems that the seat is throwing me like I am on the top of a bull (I never been on a bull, why did I give that example:D:p) .any practice tips ?
finally worked up to a 5 foot rolling gap today:D I’ve been working on it for sooo long and I finally got it. I have it on video, and I’ll include it in my latest video so you guys can see it! ![]()
also got tiregrabs while rolling. super easy.
Hi Clint May ; I watched your leg wrap and table videos ;nice videos;how do you practice hopping, any tips tricks so that I can learn ![]()
Yes, you should sit specially when you´re riding downhill. At first it will be more difficult but then it will help you a lot.
