today I made a 2.5 foot pallet jump that is super fun to rolling hop off of. I made it while it got dark, but I jumped it maybe 10 times, rode off it, and almost 180’d it
Not at all ezas!
I can use all the schooling I can get on uni and user groups! ![]()
Thanks. I hope to have some “Today I,…” progress to report on this thread soon. As someone who has only just begun, it is a great inspiration to see all the challenging and creative things people are doing with unicycles!
Thanks for the welcome guys!
I hope you get to ride on the road soon, I’ve had a blast the last couple of days actually being able to ride places.
@ezas: Yeah, I’m riding on a 24" at the moment. Right from the start I just wanted to be able to go places, so I figured a 20" would be too small for that. I’m looking at getting a 29" now, but seeing as I’m 17 and without a job, $300+ is hard to come by haha.
Today I finally did a 180 degree turn in less than a yard. For some reason I’m having a bit of trouble figuring out the balance of sharp turns, but I think I’m getting closer.
roll back free mount
working on learning free mounting.. This time trying “roll back” free mount.
I am lefty ;so after I put my dominant foot (left) to the pedal at 5 o’clock(left pedal) and gently step and push down pedal and while bringing up my right foot, the wheel rolls litle back and then I do a half rotation back with my right foot gently (to get rid of 6-12 dead lock position where there is no leverage and to gain balance); and then I lean forward and at the same time pedal forward with my left foot (dominant).
Looks good! This is the mount I use most often.
I have to say that I never really do this, normally a rolling freemount because it’s faster to set off with.
dude you should start practicing idling. you already can do a half of a revolution backwards
Except on my giraffe I hardly ever do a rolling mount. What size wheel and cranks? It seems like it would be most useful on a biggish wheel with smallish cranks.
What’s the purpose of idling? I use it for juggling, basketball, and during parades. I personally think you’re better off waiting until you can do decent stalls (2-3 seconds?) before attacking idling. Otherwise you end up working your legs more than your balance. But maybe that’s just me.
idling helps you tremendously in my opinion. makes going backwards easier to learn, makes stalls easier(kinda), and helps you progress. you can also wait at a light or to talk to someone
It wasnt today it was monday but I learned to idle one footed. So proud of myself!
Not that I can idle (More than a few times) but idling and hopping are two ways to wait for something (like a car) to pass by without having to dismount and remount, or find something to hold onto.
Thats why I want to learn to idle.
2nd would be to be able to stay on the uni while you exchange a few words with someone.
Someday I’ll be able to ride again. It’s been 14 weeks. 14 weeks of missed late summer/Fall riding. Luckily winters aren’t too bad here. Rarely colder than 40 at night and while it rains a lot, it only snows a few days a year and rarely lasts the next day.
Today my knee hurt in a different spot which I see as a good thing. I hope that means my leg/knee is adapting to the exercise stretches i’m doing for it.

How to decent stall and tips for idling
I will listen both of you;I will start practicing idling and also will work on learning decent stalling!! ![]()
For stalling: Today I tried to slow down,in order to stall but it seems I am just UPDing,in what position should my pedal be,my dominant foot down or back?,should I slow down and lean back? (stalling means you slow down and stop for a second, right?)
For idling, I try idling at my hallway ,just rocking back and forth ,I let go off the walls but then just after 1rocking tend to hold the walls,I know that doesnt help,I should let go so my body can get the feeling…
So what should I do to learn decent stalling, and any tips for idling practice ?
stalling is just going very slowly then stopping for a secind. it should be quick to learn and serve as a lead in to doing a half rev bwds
Stalling
Thnks unireed; and Should I stop in a spesific pedal position(like 6-12) or horizontal,or it doesn’t matter?
I’ve always considered stalling to be stopping forward riding with the pedal down and slightly forward, like a normal stop. Then doing one idle, swinging the foot back, and the body leaning forward and riding away from that position.
Like doing a roll back mount while riding.
in a stall you never go backwards. all it is is a short stop. and it is normally easiest with the pedals horizontal, allowing better weight distribution for your feet. try it with horizontal pedals and it should be much easier than with vertical pedals
stalling
Let me try the horizontal pedal position ;I also need to gradually slow down or ride slower(as you were mentioning before) ;because I tried to slow down qucikly and I UPDied ;this evening I will try lowest speed and stall a second at horizontal pedal positions..
+1
I found idling really difficult to learn, but my balance improved a great deal from the effort. I think it’s worth the time.
+2 I’m a learner and since I started my first tentative steps into idling (last weekend) my balance has increased lots. ![]()
