Yesterday I tried muni for the first time and it was a lot of fun. I rode the Johnson Ranch trail in San Luis Obispo on my 20" Nimbus trials with a nearly bald tire with three other guys. I’ve also been playing unicycle basketball (on the same trials unicycle) which is great fun, too. Only shooting around, 1-on-1, and H-O-R-S-E, but we’re hoping to get a more regular group of players. I’d like to eventually get a 26" muni and may need a 20" freestyle with a white tire for basketball.
Today I… managed to freemount and then ride away! Only 1 or 2 pedal revolutions, but I managed it 3 times!! Really excited by this!!!
Today, for the first time, I tried to juggle and unicycle at the same time. I took three balls out with me for my evening ride, and found it was not quite as difficult as I had anticipated. I couldn’t keep it going… the most I got was nine catches in a row, but after a little while I was consistently getting six catches. Just like juggling on terra firma, you have to make your throws consistent and keep throwing the balls. I mostly dropped when trying to catch a second ball in one hand. I found it was best to keep the pattern narrower and a little higher than I would normally throw. Although I was hopping on and off retrieving balls, there was no serious upd.
I can’t idle or juggle like Waalrus (yes, I’ve seen your vids), but I had lots of fun! ![]()
Awesome man! I remember that feeling well.. Now comes the time when you get frustrated at times because you could do it yesterday , so why not today! Just keep at it!!!
Congratulations! I’ve haven’t tried juggling balls on my unicycle yet, but I’m pretty sure clubs are easier especially when you’re on the move (assuming you can juggle clubs).
I would love to have a B’ball or hockey team in my area to play on. I’m totally jealous.
SLO is just a bit too far of a commute.
Note to self: Buy basketball
Let me add my voice to the congratulations. Freemounting is like being liberated from rank beginner to unicycle rider.
You should be excited. Keep it up. Before you know it you will be riding farther and doing turns.
The real pros are up in Berkeley which is closer to you:

Just shooting around by yourself can be a lot of fun and I think it’s great practice for unicycle skills. And it’s much easier on my bad knees than regular basketball. It’s also a good way to discover current and former unicyclists in your area. More people approach me on the basketball court than anywhere else. Maybe because I’m usually in a park with lots of people around and in one spot for a while.
Congrats! I’ve been avoiding this myself for some reason. I got both skills down separately but for some reason I’ve been avoiding putting them together! Your post may just have pushed me over the edge.

Yay! Go for it.
I am such a show-off, I just can’t wait to be able to sail down bike trails on my uni with a mills mess going on. I am sure that all it will take is a little bit of practice (a decade or two?).
Did a 7’ 6" rolling hop onto a curb today
Man I really hope that that was a typo.. The NBA wants to talk to you if you can leap that high
Not 7 feet high, like 7 feet far…distance wise…
Congratulations!
An important step.
Best regards,
Sanne
Dude that’s awesome! I can barely rolling hop 1 foot :o
I can barely hop with two feet! :o
My rolling hops are rubbish. I can probably manage about 1 foot, maybe 18 inches on a good day. I can never see myself hopping 7 feet! ![]()
What’s your secret?
Uhhh… haul balls
throw your arm forward and fold
I tried going faster today and I got 92 inches…yesterday was 90 ![]()
Today was an awesome unicycling day! Third time mountain unicycling. My 26" muni should arrive later this week! And this morning I shot some juggling + unicycling videos. The Mill’s Mess is really hard to follow.
I have spent the better part of a month with that frustration… At least this morning I seemed to be pretty reliable, ie. about 50%. Congrats on cracking this important skill.
I did manage to do 2.25km on Saturday morning, which is my new non-stop record. When do you stop worrying about non-stop distance?? I’ll be losing count of the laps soon anyway. About time to try riding down to our river and riding the riverside path, which is my main goal.
I did notice on Saturday that I was starting to feel better balanced and comfortable riding faster, not the usual wobblies that I have normally had. Perhaps this is the progress I have been looking for?
Cheers
