The Beginners "Today I..." Thread

today I rolling hopped a 5 set and replaced my CC tire with the monty eagle claw, but after I put my frame back on the cranks move really slow like the frame is on too tight, squeezing the bearings.

I just have one more surgery so I’m relieved! Also relieved school is done but been soooo tired this weekend. I rode the uni this morning. Getting the turns down pretty good on the 24. But only going like 1/4 mile. I think the skinny tire makes it harder. I might go ahead and put the short cranks on my 24 and start back on my trials again so I can get the hops down. As tight as I am, I seem to like to jump everything. Thats why I’ve been biking a lot as the balance on that is a cake walk. But I’m sure I will slowly love the hopping on the uni too, more so then uni spins. So think the small cranks should go on the big uni?

Gaithersburg is in MD. If it were close to you I would be at your front door asking if you wanted to come out and play lol.

And wondering about Dane too. What I’ve noticed in all action sports, sometimes the ones that progress the fastest, get bored or injured and stop. I hope its neither. Thats why I dont mind the fact that this doesnt come easy to me as I will never get bored with the uni. So much to work on!

Tomorrow no work, no school and no rain! So that means I’m going on an all day play fest, woo-hoo!! I will try to sleep well tonight so I have lots of energy.

It’s neat to come back after a few days to see what you’ve all been working on and another new person (I’m still new here too…). Welcome MrBudman.

I took my uni on our camping trip this weekend and tried a few freemounts. I only landed a couple of them, some at 6 & 12 and some 9 & 3 (clock number positions). I guess the 6 & 12 mounts were close to the rolling mount only with a slight step forward to get my weight up and over the seat, not really walking.
I also tried riding with a small backpack which wasn’t difficult, tried a paved hill a few times both up and down ( despite protests from my wife! ) that also worked easily but it wasn’t too steep. My 3 year old was with me and he rode it with training wheels and some coaching on the brakes.
Many of the roads there were gravel and I did a lot of riding on those too using trees in the grass to mount where I was able.

My longest trip was probably a mile both ways only stopping at the end to go to the camp store. I was very happy that I didn’t UPD or get hit by a car on the road!

All-in-all it was a busy weekend and I made some good progress. I’m glad to be home, I’m beat!

I just continued to work on what I have been working on. I set up the camera and tried to film myself doing the rolling mount, but suddenly found it much more difficult. I think I was trying to choreograph my steps too much. Anyways, here’s a bit of vid.

Looking good trickcyclist,

Once you’re up you appear to be quite steady. Is it easier on the slight grade of the driveway than it is on the flat road? I would think so.

Mounts are a little easier on the slight downward gradient. I also try to do them in the other direction and on the gravel, so I get some practice on a slight uphill and on different surfaces. The gradient makes tight circles a bit of a challenge.

There’s an outdoor ice rink with boards where I work (no ice at this time of year, but paved), so I think I am going to make it my uni-playground through the summer. The boards should be a great help to learn riding backwards and wheel walking.

I think it would be fun to make a studded tire and ride on ice. I THINK it would be fun.

I think NOT lol, ouch. I’m waiting for my short cranks to arrive. I have a new tube but no hookworm yet. Anyway, should I put them on the trials or the 24? I’m worried it might be harder to learn on the 24.

tc - you must be tall! Your 29 uni is the same size as my 24 is to me lol. :o

Yup, 5’ 10" and still growing… (sideways, unfortunately). :o

I grew an inch taller when I had a baby. I wish I were taller than I am, but I’m not squirting out any more babies to meet that goal. I’ll just live with being 5’5". I should be able to manage a 29er (I hope).

I’m only 5’1". In order for me to ride a 29er they have to cut the seat post. At least you’re a little taller!

Hey Trick. Did you say that you are two months into learning to ride? You look like an expert, at least to me. LOL! Well, it’s inspiring to think if I keep on it hopefully I can be at that level on a few months. Great production on the vids too.

I was wondering the same thing. I thought he might be posting on the origional today I thread but I guess he isn’t.

So far today I have gotten 180s almost down. I can probably do them 80-90% of the time. I think that I will learn backwards riding next so that I can do them rolling instead of static.

Santa Barbara had bad fires recently. That might have complicated Dane’s life and provided some unwelcome distractions–like finding a new place to live.

Yup, I started in mid-March, and have tried to do some riding every day since then. I throw the uni in the car so it’s available wherever I go, and I have an extra one to keep down there in Florida for when I am doing my snowbird thing. When I first learned I was flapping my arms around like mad (a mad Canadian snowbird??? :sunglasses: ), but have tried hard to get them under control. It certainly helps to make your riding look more elegant.

The only problem with the rolling mount is that sometimes your feet don’t land right on the pedals. Today I was out on my 29"er, and as I tried to move my feet into better position on the pedals, my heel caught on the upcoming crank. The uni came to an abrupt halt: the rider received an equally abrupt reminder of the laws of motion. :frowning:

The new wrist protectors work.

Not to get too off subject, but I live here in South Florida. Where do you stay when you come down?

Tampa, where Bayshore Blvd is made for uni. 6 miles of unbroken sidewalk with 6 miles of balustrade that’s just the right height.

I’m barely 5’1" too and I cut the seat post on all the unis I ride. We might need to cut the frame tube too for the 29".

For a note, put the 127mm on the 24. Glad I did it at work cause its not as easy to change cranks as it says. Anyway, I guess since my legs are so short, felt more comfortable to not to have to extend my legs out so much. Just wondering on mounting though, more difficult? I feel more stable on shorter cranks honestly. And the ventures compared to the KH cranks are about a lb. lighter lol.

Nice. I’m on the east coast. I’m hoping that by fall or so I’ll be able to ride the 2 mile Hollywood Broadwalk.

Oh geez. I never even considered that. Dang I hope he’s alright. If he lost his house, he probably lost his unicycles as well. I’m really hoping he didn’t lose anything. He’s a nice guy, an excellent rider, and he didn’t seem like the kind of person who would suddenly stop.
