The Bad Brains

The bad brains are the greatest band ever (in hardcore at least), this is a fact not an opinion, if you disagree you are wrong. I saw them (well the bad brains minus HR (original singer)) at CBGBs last weekend and it was amazing. To think that some of the songs they played were written 27 years ago blows my mind. Do yourself a favor and download everything by the bad brains right now or go buy their records. Their music is faster and more original than anyone before them in the genre.

Are you trying to get a job as White House spokesman?

Yeah, I’m working on becoming a little more arrogant.

I would, but you spelt “favour” wrong, so I’m not going to.

Phil

Or a president?

yeah 27 years ago music was acually good, especialy in punk music…so dont be so mind blown but more of an epiphany…

by the way its Bad Brains not The Bad Brains.

also H.R. is one of the best frontmen ever.

27 years, you say? My, that’s positively ancient! And they’re the best band ever? :astonished:

Later today, I will sell all my Buddy Holly, Eddie Cochran, Flaming Groovies, Led Zeppelin, Rolling Stones, Jerry Lee Lewis, Chuck Berry, BB King, etc., and this evening I will spend every last penny I raise on Bad Brains downloads.

Or if we narrow it down to punk, then all that seminal stuff from 1976/77 will have to go to make shelf room for my new collection of Bad Brains CDs.:stuck_out_tongue:

Bad Brains: Rock for Light.

I bought it this lunch time. I’m listening to it now.

Tracks 1 - 4: Loud music for boys. Not bad in a generic sort of way.

Track 5: not bad reggae.

Tracks 6 - 9: More loud music for boys.

Track 10. Not bad reggae.

Tracks 11 - 14: more loud music for boys.

Track 15: slightly strange reggae.

Tracks 16 - 19: more loud music for boys. 17 is noticeably good.

Track 20: instrumental reggae. A bit of a “filler”.

A definite pattern emerges: 4 tracks of LMFB, 1 track reggae; repeat ad nauseam.

Fortunately, I like loud music for boys, whether it is called “hardcore”, “punk”, “rock and roll”, or any of the other arbitrary classifications. I also like reggae. Not bad. I wouldn’t say they’re the best band ever, even within the genre. Neverthess, I thank you for introducing me to them.

I was downloading their album Rock For Light, and it was goin real fast and was gonna finish in about three more minutes, then it STOPPED. hopefully someone will start seedin it again soon…

BB is good

the end

Guess what we used to say 27 years ago.

Well, not exactly 27 years ago, but in 1978/9 I was 16/17, and into Buddy Holly, Chuck Berry, Carl Perkins, Billy Lee Riley, Eddie Cochran, Duane Eddy - all at their peaks around 1957 - 1960 ish. So I was 20 or so years behind the times, and all modern music was cr*p.

Years later, I listen to music from 1978/9 and realise that some of it is great: Sham 69, Buzzcocks etc.

What has happened is that in the 20 or so years since, memories and steady sales figures have combined to filter out much of the absolute cr*p that was released. Only the best remains - unless you are unwise enough to buy a compilation CD with the words “rare” or “previously unreleased” written ont he cover!

So in 1959, most of the bands were mediocre, but they have fallen by the wayside. In 1979, most of the bands were mediocre, and have fallen by the wayside. In 2006, most bands are mediocre - mediocrity is the norm.

In 2030 (assuming the survival of the planet, continuance of western civilisation, and the ready availability of recorded music) people will look back on 2006 as a golden age, remembering all the great bands, and forgetting all the complete cr*p.

I missed this post because I have been off the board mostly during school. Im glad that you enjoyed them. Yeah I was just a little excited after seeing them play at cbgbs, but in the genre…definitely one of the best bands.

What I meant by that statement was that I was blown away that I was able to see Dr. Know and Darryl play songs that they wrote over 20 years ago. Some of the songs they played there havent been played by them for quite some time (such as banned in dc). Over 5 years ago when they toured as the soul brains they mostly played reggae stuff and included a couple old punk/hardcore songs such as Right Brigade. Also…I dont see a point in trying to correct me when it comes to putting the article “the” in front of the band name Bad Brains. I do that with a lot of bands that don’t officially have “the” in front of their names when speaking about them in a sentence. If I were to make a list, however, of my favorite bands…I would leave out “the”.
Also, I definitely know that music was actually good 20+ years ago, some of my favorite bands are from early 80s punk/hardcore. Hell…my life revolves around a music subculture that started then.

I can send it to you if you want, pm me and Ill send you my AIM screenname.

very true, that was the only bad thing about the show(since H.R. wasnt there). However, it is probably a good thing H.R. didnt play the “reunion” show because he is weird as hell now. When the soul brains played D.C. 5 years ago he came out on stage extremely high and on something…and shined a flashlight into a birdcage or something very strange like that. H.R. is also very hit or miss. When he isnt on drugs and weird as hell he goes crazy in a good way on stage, hah. I was glad seeing them play with John Joseph of the cro mags, who is also a great frontman, and more consistent with being on target.

sail’in…sail’in on and onnnnnn…

or just look and see that it’s listed in your pofile as jamon817

hah yeah i forgot i put it in my profile.

i’m movin, hey i’m moving on, sail on, sail on, sail on sail on screeeeeeeech

If you want to hear an interesting cover of that song listen to a version done by Moby. I dont really like his music, but its definitely an interesting cover. Moby was actually watching that show at cbgbs from the bar. I was hoping that during the breakdown in right brigade he would go towards the stage and lose his shit…but it didnt happen. Another celebrity I saw at that show watching bad brains from the bar was Steve Buscemi (I wanted to go up to him and say “shut the fu*k up donny!”, but i decided not to be annoying and leave him alone).
