With MUni weekend approaching and some long rides planned I thought
some people might be interested in improved seat comfort. Jeannie
and I worked out a simple design called the air pillow. An article
with picture appears on Muniac Manor. Click on "Impirical MUni" and
select "Air Pillow" from the menu at left. BTW, John Drummond has
Roach seat covers and there's still some time to make equipment
improvements. Later.
Scott, Can we have actual dimensions for the fabric pieces? Or should we all
just bring $10 to Nevada and you’ll bring a bunch of air pillows for midnight
seat stuffing?

I’m definitely interested! On my Muni, I don’t have much of a problem. I’m using
a standard Miyata seat overstuffed with an extra layer of 3/8" foam all around
(Geoff’s seat upgrade). I can ride for 5 hours without much discomfort at all.
But my Coker is another story. Since I sit in the saddle 99% of the time (vs
maybe 50-70% on muni), even the air/gel combination Miyata seat I made isn’t
perfect. After just 30 minutes of riding, I can already feel “it”, and if I ride
for an hour straight, I am already sore. If you could bring some of these to
Muni weekend, I’d love to get some!
Thanks,
Nathan

We’ll have to see who gets the patent papers filed first.
I recently made a similar contraption for my Miyata air seat. I call mine The
Hernia Bag for obvious reasons because it keeps the inner tube from squeezing
out of the sides of the seat. We’ll have to conference at the Muni Weekend. Mine
is not exactly a work of art. I haven’t touched a sewing machine since 7th grade
home economics and it shows. All I can say is that it was an experience making
the thing.

What if the Roach seat cover came with a sleeve sewn into the top of the cover,
for insertion of the tube. I could easily ask Roach to do this. Any design
suggestions? I’m thinking of a lightweight ripstop nylon sleeve, made by sewing
second, lightweight piece of fabric into the seatcover, pleated in a couple of
places to allow the innertube to expand.

Definitely bring extras if you have some. Sign me up after Chris!

Now that is positive marketing. Find out what your market wants and adjust to
it. Let me know when when they are ready (the covers with the sleeve).

The purpose of the “hernia bags” is to keep the tubes from expanding out the
sides and creating a pinch point against your leg. So if Roach adds a sleeve, it
must also restrict expansion of the tube to no wider than the width of the seat
base. So the sleeve has to be non-pleated. If Scott tests one and says the Roach
prototypes are as good as his canvas bags, I think we’d all go for the Roach
modified seat covers.

I’ve now got two tubes underneath an imitation (made it myself, thank you)
Roach seat cover. Both valve stems are accessible from the outside. I made a
few extra sleeves that I’ll bring. No guarantee on the size/shape. I did my
best, so WYSIWYG.
