Tennis balls in spokes

hey, so fairly beginner level unicyclist here I was watching some flatland videos particularly Trey Haun’s riding and noticed he often rides with up to 3 tennis balls wedged in the spokes of his wheel. I’m trying to figureout if it is just a fasion type thing (he thinks it looks cool so he rides with it) or if there is a practical reason for it.

thanks

Fashion.

I would also say style points instinctively. Yet, thinking about the stresses of a wheel, I was wondering if might serve also as a way to reduce noises between spokes or other mechanical benefits in extreme situations ? But for such far-fetched theories, a picture would help (if you still have an example at hand) :squinting_face_with_tongue:

ok I will fill up my wheel with lotsa tennisballs, so all spokes will have their creaking noises reduced. The hub of the 36” is of course wider than a tennis ball, so there I will place a basket ball

I know it only from unicycle hockey. Sometimes we have tennis balls between our spokes, happens rarely, but most times the keeper :face_with_monocle: Usually we remove the ball immediately to keep the match running

Always envied 48 spoke wheels for being tennis ball proof…

…but are they ping pong ball proof?

Someone once told me that in BMX it used to be a quick fix for loose spokes, that somehow grew into a style others copied. Doubt it is better than just tightening the spokes, but I guess in a pinch without a spoke key that fix could work. (Not sure how true that story is either).

Is the guy a juggler, by chance?
