Tall Guy on a 20"

Hey RSU. I don’t post much here, but I think I am going to start making it a habit, since I’ve been getting back into the uni-thing in a big way lately.

As such, I’ve been drooling over all the cool toys I can blow my money on over at UDC.

I mostly practice freestyle stuff. Currently, I am riding a pretty bland 24" Nimbus II set-up, with 150 mm cranks. Those are the only defining characteristics I can think of. I’m thinking of getting a 20" of some sort, probably with some 114 or 110 mm cranks, since that is apparently the way to go for freestyle riding.

MY QUESTION: Is there any reason for me to believe that my being tall (I’m 6’3") will making riding a 20" awkward? Anyone have experience with this? Thanks!

I learned on a 24" Uni (6’ tall) and when I got a 20" freestyle it felt small to me and still does. But now I find it fun to ride around on a uni that I pretty much just step off of if I blow something I’m trying. But it sill looks funny with so much post sticking out.

If you got some jack to blow, you could get the KH 20" Flat rim and have yourself a very versatile little Uni with a good stout rim for any type of flat/freestyle type riding you might want to do. Thats what I ended up doing on my Nimbus 20" freestyle frame.

totally normal.

i’m 6’2 and 99% of the time i ride a trials uni.

Well, nothing can be more awkward than when we all learned to ride! … just kidding. It can be.

You probably will find it rather awkward from the 24" (I feel a drastic change from my 36er to my 20) but so long as you have a long enough seat post, you’ll be perfectly fine, and you’ll be able to learn your freestyle skills a bit easier if you ask me (I don’t know much about freestyle, but I honestly thought 20" was the optimal size for it).

6’3" here, you should probably either get a long post or a long neck. If you’re blowing lots of money - nimbus eclipse does their frames in 100mm graduations, 400mm would probably be the best size for you.

“(I feel a drastic change from my 36er to my 20)”

Haha. Isn’t that statement true by definition? That’s like saying “I feel wet when I step out of the shower.”

But seriously, that’s a little bit more of a change than I’m talking about!

I already have a 400mm seat post on my 24", and I would definitely get the same on a 20". I was also already thinking about the long post. I’ll check the inseam guidelines they have on the site, too.

I guess really the best thing I can do is try one out. Yet another reason to go to the NYC fest this weekend.

I’m just 2cm shorter, and don’t understand why you would be awkward.
Just learn some skills, and you’ll be impressive to any non-unicyclist (well; except judges at “Country-X got Talent”).

Leo! If you and I are (approximately) the same height, and you ride a 20" the way you do, then there is no reason why I shouldn’t get a 20" for myself. You’re amazing!

Although I must say, if I was only concerned with impressing non-unicyclists, then I would have stopped a long time ago. Most people are just impressed to see me riding it at all. I ride for me. Thanks for the encouragement.

Coming from a 24", riding a 20" may initially feel a little odd, and slow. But for freestyle 20" is the way to go, and your height is not an issue for riding a 20".

youll be fina on a smaller wheel as long as you ride no further than a quarter mile. i feel so slow pedalling so much and going like 5 ft per revolution, compared to more than 9 on my coker.

edit: 6.28 feet per rev on 20", and 9.42 on the 36".

You need another edit (or undo your edit). It’s 5.24 feet per rev on the 20", more like you originally wrote. 6.28 ft is for 24".

I wouldn’t even worry about the seatpost all that much. I’m 6’3 and I cut my 350mm seatpost down by about 3.5 inches. Granted, I ride trials, but I’m still totally comfortable for normal riding. Good luck to you and your new uni sir.

diameter is 2(pi)r. r is 10, so diameter is 20 times pi, or …oops. i made a calculator error and divided by ten instead of twelve, to change from inches to feet. my bad. 24" would be 6.28’, 26" is 6.80’, 29" is 7.59’, and so on.

Insta-fail.

circumference, for future reference, is 2(pi)r.

Double fail! If you had noticed his wording and the things that he followed his “Diameter is 2(pi)r” statement, you would see that he meant to say circumference, because he used the radius/diameter measurements properly. :sunglasses:

damnit. thanks mr turnip for noticing that it was a typo. you were correct. but anyway, lets get back to heightvs uni size
