Sydney: Mountain/XC Unicycling

Hey, was easy, it was tarmac, beat a couple of bikes up it.

Nice ride that was - the first bit is super easy, then a little bit of undulating stuff, followed by a massive fast descent that we were going well over 20km/h down (quite fast on a 26"), then a cool singletrack bit that starts easy for 4 or 5 km, but then is suddenly all technical for the last km.

Also I rode Narrowneck - google for the ‘fat hippy’ mountain bike guide for the route - it’s a big ride along a long narrow ridge that comes right out of the middle of a deep valley - amazing views in all directions from the viewpoint at the end. Nothing very technical, but very very steep, so I’d say a 29er ride not coker - it’d be unrideable uphill on coker, and pushing a coker up those steep bits would be an effort. It’s about 34km return from the train station - when I have wifi I’ll upload the gps track to my rides.

Good one Joe I bet the cyclist were surprised. You certainly have chosen a good selection of trails while you were here.Good luck at RTL.

Geoff I am a possible starter for the careflight race

Some gps tracks -

Manly Dam (with the others)

Manly Dam (Second lap - just me)

You can’t tell from this link, as it includes from the ferry and back, but the actual lap time itself was 1:06, so if anyone is looking for a challenge, you could try and beat the hour for a lap - I think it’d be easily doable if you know the trail well already.

Oaks

The oaks one has loads of ‘lap’ markers on it, because I marked every time I crashed or had a UPD with a lap marker. You can see the technical sections, by the two places the dots cluster up. There was actually one UPD I forgot to tag, at about 4.5km, so I make it 16 UPDs all up.

Joe

Thanks for posting the gps stuff Joe,very interesting. For purely egotistical reasons to you have any pics from Manly Dam.By the way I reckon I could beat your Manly Dam time…on a mountainbike.

Just letting anyone who was thinking of signing up for the Careflight race know that you need to register by the 13th of June. Thats three days from now (when I wrote this) so make sure you don’t miss out. See you there!

A few years ago Joel Penson and I rode the 6ft track starting from Jenolan caves. It was a nice tour if you’ve got a day to spare and are in the area.

Sorry to confuse everyone but it seems the organisers of the race have changed the registration closing date to the 20th of June. This may be because in the past it hasn’t been necessary to register and most participants are probably just going to turn up on the day. If you miss registration I recommend you do the same (they’re not gonna just send you home surely).

There were four unicyclists in the race and we all finished! Scott Lynch did the best with a time of 2:21, Andrew Mell next with 2:34, then Tim Hans with 2:39 and lastly me with 2:44. If anyone is interested we all did the race on KH24’s. Geoff couldnt make it because his flight got back into Australia an hour before the race started after being at RTL.
