Would love to get good at stand up trick, and am currently nowhere close. I can jump up to frame from riding, but can’t do much after that. What should I work on to get better at stand up walk, or stand up koosh koosh. Anything I should keep in mind? My frame is a nimbus ii so the fork isn’t super square but I can comfortably stand and hop and kinda wheel walk comfortably without falling off.
I’m not at all an expert (just did my first pirouette last Sunday), but I think most important skill is getting a good grip of the frame and being extremely good at normal gliding. Stand up gliding is not hard, the hard part is the transition for which you need and spotless consistency in gliding.
To maximize grip I advise learning 1ft coasting/gliding in both sides to discover how to get as much grip at possible with each feet and squeezing the frame tube with your foots.
To learn stand up gliding you can go to a slope and mount into stand up gliding.
As for the transition, I’ve had no success doing jump to su gliding, so I can’t give tips. For gliding to su gliding I would advise learning first transitions from riding and wheel walk into su ww and then trying from gliding to su gliding at different speeds downhill and flat, always remembering to keep your body straight.
Edit: forgot that you were asking also about su ww.
I think main thing for getting good at stand up tricks is getting comfortable in the new position, which simply requires hours. For good wheel walk you will want to have one feet on the frame and another on the wheel, in order to put a lot of strength on the wheel (for good grip) you need to put the knee of the motor leg below the saddle. You can play with different positions to put your foots, change shoes, change tire or change the saddle height.
So where are you starting from?
How is your gliding?
Can you step up into stand walk from riding?
If you can do those 2, then just combine them.
Do you have a partner to pull you?
The usual way people learn is with a partner: the partner (on foot or on unicycle) pulls with one hand and the rider starts in sitting glide and stands up to standglide. You can also start standing at a stop and the other person pulls (works better walking).
Personally my gliding is not good and I mostly practice solo without a partner, but I recently learned the transition from riding to standwalk (both from pedals and from one-foot riding). I would consider that a good prerequisite if you are learning solo without someone pulling you.
Oh, I also missed that. As kreKET said, it’s mostly practice. I learned but mounting into standup and then pushing. Like normal wheel walk it takes time for your body to learn the position, but is mostly practice. Try to keep your body as upright as possible. While you can experiment with big/small or fast/slow kicks, the best is to brake and almost stop and do a standstill between kicks. Good luck as it feels good (I’ve added stand walk to my freestyle routine this year and hope I land the step-down this time in my performance in a few weeks).
