I decided to swap from 137mm KH Moments on my 27.5 Oracle to 125mm Nimbus VCX. I think I like the slightly shorter cranks but I preferred the added q factor on the moments. I have a pair of Spirits in 127mm length but don’t need the crank mounted brake rotor since the Oracle has a hub mount. Is there any reason not to use the Spirits without the rotor?
Assuming there’s enough clearance I’d probably put the rotor bolts back in just to keep the threads clean.
I have Spirit cranks on my 29” Oracle – I just went and had a look at them. The only potential problem I see with putting the screws in without a disc is that they might bottom out in the hole (there shouldn’t be any clearance issue), you’ll also have the heads picking up dirt and miscellaneous detritus… I just put some grease in the holes to stop any potential corrosion, if I ever need to mount a disc hopefully that will just clean out and the threads will be good as new.
As a result of an error that occured when I was ordering them, I have such a set of Spirits in use. Only issue is that a couple times my trousers got caught. But never badly so - nothing like a shoe lace that gets caught. It just felt like someone was plucking them. Not reassuring, but nothing that stopped me from using the crank this way. Ideally I was to make and install a small disk or ring to prevent this from happening, but the urge to do so hasn’t been strong enough, so far.
