Speaking of spoke lengths issues

I have been finding i have trouble with spoke lengths building around a Schlumpf hub

Every time i build a wheel i lace it up and spokes are always too long!!! so i end up having to take them out again, source some appropriate length ones and start over again…

Is it just me one anyone else experiencing this problem?

Recently
New KH29 i fitted 282mm Wheelsmith Spokes
I now have some 276mm spokes on the way

Before
A Pro-lite 700c rim i had 282mm Pro-lite Areo spokes
Cut those ones because it was easier to replace with 270mm DT competitions

I have 362mm spokes aside for a future 36er Guni build. Did i get the right length spokes for that???

I understand i overlooked that a 700c size rim is deeper than KH 29 wide rim but whats with 282mm not working on that? Originally i believe 282mm was the recommended size. Then people were fitting 280mm with no issues.

Is it that the flange on the Latest Schlumpf has changed slightly or am i just destined to waste spokes when lacing rims?

Any ideas?
And can anyone share what length and brand spokes have been used with which schlumpf hub successfully?

Many thanks in advance

Dartmoor Revolt 26 inch (ERD 534mm)
0636 Schlumpf Hub
12mm nipples / 250mm spokes

Schlumpf hub dimensions for calculating spoke length (worked for me):
Hub flange width = 66.7mm
Hub flange Diameter = 91.47mm
Hub hole Diameter = 2.9mm

Thanks Ben!
i will check mine to see if it relates the same

What calculator are you using?

Calculator?
Simply went by lengths stated through kh and schlumpf recommendations . Also reading other guniists builds.

Appears no one had the issues I have. Should I be using a calculator to cross reference and check for correct lengths? If so which calculator can I use and input all my own data. I believe some only hold data on select bike rims.

Anyone know for certain the
new schlumpf + latest 36 stealth rim spoke length???

Thanks

What lacing pattern are you using? The difference in length is about right to add a cross to the pattern, like from 3x to 4x. Although with a flange diameter of almost 100mm’s I’m not sure you could go 4x without extreme nipple angles at the rim. I’d have to try to be sure, so if anyone wants to give me a schlumpf for a while I’ll be happy to play around with lacing patterns.

Only ever laced in 3 cross

I believe the posted lengths by KHU are for 3x.

Yes, I was talking about 3x. Btw, when your spokes are too short by 2-3mm you can always compensate by using longer nipples (16 or 14 instead of 12mm). I actually had to do this because the rim ERD on the homepage was off by a few mm.

i have never been only mm’s off. its been over 1cm each time

also 16mm nippleles from udc NZ have the same thread length as 12mm nipples i already had… double checked it wasnt true but the thread turns were the same sadly. not that its my issue. spoke are always initially too long.

why is my KH29 requiring 276mm spokes not 280mm as recommended at 3x lacing?

IMHO this is the most accurate calculator on the internet. Not because I made it, but because the formula differs fundamental from all other web-interfaces, except DT - but without their brand specific subtractions.

ERD could still be correct, but doubt it takes the alignment of holes in consideration. This is for sure the case at X-spoking, but you can adjust the calculation by modifying the given hub width.

thanks for the calc link. Looks neat!!! i will play with it tomorrow and see if i can work out why nothing seems to come together for me first lace

Mr Muni Tassie - spoke length depends on several variables. Namely the lacing pattern, the ERD, the width of the hub, the diameter of the spoke holes on the hub flanges and the flange diameter. The most important single factor in determining spoke length is the ERD (effective rim diameter) of the particular rim you are using. Naturally this varies from rim to rim. To solve the issue of having to accurately measure ERD and the other dimensions, the thoughtful folks at www.unicycle.uk.com have a spoke calculator with drop-down lists to choose your rim and hub. Almost all the common unicycle hubs and rims are there. If your rim is not there, you’ll definitely need to measure it accurately yourself. I use this spoke calculator frequently and find it to be pretty darned reliable (I generally build with Wheelsmith spokes and nipples).

I also found Sheldon Brown’s wheelbuilding page to be useful for my first few wheel builds. Worth reading!

I was under impression kh rims and schlumpf hubs laced 3 cross would be the same for everyone? I will check my erd if its the same as the websites and check the hub diameters matches schlumpf website and bens details.
Also I wig to check 36 guni length. Guessing most kh 36 gunis have same erds and hub measurements

Was kind of hoping to compile a list for anyone schlumpf wheel building ei
Rim - size, Erd, brand
Hub - vintage and diameters
Spoke - brand and length
Nipple - brand and length

Mainly concerned with using kh rims and nimbus 36 rim

Time to check my data. Thanks for all the input so far, cheers

i just laced up a wheel, and the spokes are just a tiny bit too long.
they won’t thread any further, but the spokes are not tight yet.

Its 32h rim and 48h hub

If I relace the spokes to go through different holes…so that a open hole is between two spokes that are crossing…how much longer would this be? (would the spokes possibly be too short?)

IMG_1721.JPG

Just eyeballing it… spoke holes are about 1cm apart, the extra distance would be split between two spokes, and because of the angle, only about half of that distance would translate to spoke length.

So maybe 2.5mm longer? Which sounds hopeful.
