SPAM advice -- suggested newsgroup guidelines for handling SPAM

Helpful hints for not being pulled in by SPAM:

  • If the To: line is not to you (or your mailing list, ng, etc.), it’s
    probably spam.
  • If it’s about taking credit cards online, it’s spam (does everybody get
    dozens of these a month?).
  • If it’s from friend.com, it’s probably spam.

Spam is evil because it hogs bandwidth, clogs our inboxes, and wastes our time.
Replying to spam (to the group) adds to the problem. Please don’t
comment/complain about spam messages back to the group, unless you have a way to
“kill the spammer”.

On the other hand, please do complain to the sender, or ISP, or anti-spamming
organizations, about any spam messages you want. Spam is still less annoying
than sales calls during dinner, but I’d like to see it go away too.

BTW, don’t believe this:

If it came at the bottom of a message that was this! This message to “Dan” was
broadcast to rec.sport.unicycling, and probably dozens or hundreds of other
newsgroups as well. Some ethics.

My personal advice, never follow links in unsolicited email. Delete it without
reading. Businesses that use spam for marketing are not worthy of your business.
Save it for others who find you using legitemate means.

Okay, I’m off the soapbox. John Foss, the Uni-Cyclone (reply to

“Spam sucks.”

Spammers regularly harvest email addresses from posts to Usenet, so anyone who
posts frequently will likely see a lot of spam- especially if your email address
is not “spam-protected.” Even if your address is “protected”, there’s no
guarantee that you won’t get tons of spam.

The same goes for sending email to addresses to be “removed” from lists. What
happens in actuality is that the email address of anyone who replies to “remove”
addresses is collected into a database of legitimate email addresses (which are
then sold to other spammers).
